Today the application process for Clare’s Law opens in Alberta. The Disclosure to Protect Against Domestic Violence Act, or Clare’s Law, allows people who have experienced or feel at risk of domestic violence to obtain information about whether their current or former partner has a history of domestic violence. This allows them to make informed decisions about their safety. Following the application, those who apply will be asked and connected to domestic violence services i...f they would like them. Our Executive Director spoke to the Calgary Herald about the new law. For more information on Clare’s Law and the application process: www.alberta.ca/clareslaw https://calgaryherald.com//updated-federal-regulations-put #ClaresLaw #domesticviolenceawareness #domesticviolence

An interesting article about the pandemics impact on rates of domestic violence and abuse. "Gender-based violence (GBV) has skyrocketed in Canada since the pandemic started: When we went into lockdown last March, incidents of GBV increased by as much as 30% in parts of the country. Racialized and marginalized women, and those who live in rural communities, are especially vulnerable." https://www.refinery29.com//domestic-violence-increase-wom

We are truly humbled by the generosity of Lukes Drug Mart during this difficult year - they’ve donated 100% of profits from masks and sanitizer sales, and to date they’ve raised and donated nearly $20,000 to HomeFront! We are so thankful for their continued support - this money will make a big impact on the families we serve! Please show them some love during this time, they’re an amazing local #yyc small business Repost @lukesdrugmart: Thanks to everyone who has pur...chased a @mediumrarechef mask from us in 2020. At the beginning of the pandemic, we decided to donate 100% of our profits from mask sales to @homefrontyyc to support their efforts to end domestic violence in Calgary. To date, we have raised and donated $19,667.08 between Bridgeland and Killarney. We will be continuing to donate all of our profits from mask sales for all of 2021. See more

Thank you to the Calgary Herald for highlighting HomeFront as part of the 2020 Christmas Fund. They helped me through the entire court process and were there for me the whole time, she says of the Calgary organization dedicated to assisting domestic violence victims with a wide variety of services, including support navigating the court system. They helped me find my voice again and the inner me who was missing for a long time. They made me want to fight. We hope you'll ...take a moment to read this incredible article featuring a few local agencies, including HomeFront, YWCA Calgary, Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter and Calgary Seniors' Resource Society that are working tireless to support and protect individuals impacted by domestic violence. https://calgaryherald.com//escaping-domestic-violence-the- #yyc #yyccharity #enddomesticviolence #calgary #homefront2020 #christmasfund

Last year, HomeFront supported 3297 individuals and their children. Although our Case Managers are carrying high caseloads, there are no waitlists for our services as we know each person who contacts the police and charges are laid needs our support as they navigate the justice system. #homefront2020 #homefrontyyc #dogoodyyc #yyc #enddomesticviolence

Today for our DV 101 post, we are going to talk about the Types of Abuse. It's a common myth that abuse is just physical, when in fact there are many forms. Abuse looks different in different relationships, below are some of the common types of abuse: : Can include hitting, punching, choking, kicking, pushing, throwing objects, biting, etc.... , : Can include name calling, put-downs, swearing, threats, degrading language and words etc. : Can include forcing any sexual contact without consent, continued sexual contact when asked to stop, etc. : Not allowing someone to practice their faith or preventing them to take part in spiritual practices, making fun of someone's beliefs, etc. : Can include the withholding of money, providing allowances, limiting access to bank accounts or credit cards, preventing you from working, spending your money without your consent, etc. : Failing to make sure a child or another dependent is safe and has emotional support and basic daily needs met, withholding medication or health care, etc. : controlling where you go, who you see, or speak to, not allowing you to leave the home or have a job, etc. : Destroying phones, laptops, keying cars, etc. : Can include unwanted following, sending unwanted texts, emails, or phone calls; asking friends and family where you are, leaving unwanted notes or threating messages on vehicles etc. Many of these types of abuse are crimes and can be reported to the Calgary Police Service - they are available anytime by calling the non-emergency line at 403-266-1234, or 9-1-1 if you are in immediate danger. For support and information about abuse, you can contact the Family Violence Info Line at 310-1818.
