The SDSSAA is very pleased to recognize its student-athletes of the week: Matthew Smith, a grade 12 honour roll student, has been a key member of Confederation’...s basketball program over the past three years. In addition, Matthew made tremendous strides as a runner this season. In only two years of X-Country running, he has positioned himself as one of the city's elite runners, finishing second at this season's city championships by only 8 seconds. Matthew is an inspiration to other runners on the team and has pushed team members to raise their own goals as Matthew's speed continues to increase. Chloe Pitura, a grade 11 honour roll student, is a multi-sport athlete who has been making a big impact in every sport she has participated in at Confederation S.S. Chloe has been a key member and leader on the school's gymnastics, x-country, and track and field teams. In addition, Chloe has been a standout on the girl’s flag football team where her defensive abilities have been a key reason her cohort has earned a 25 -1 record and two banners over the past three seasons.

This year, the students taking the transportation technology class decided it would be a good idea to raise money for the Sudbury Food Bank by installing tires. The students were encouraged to bring their parents in after school hours to showcase all of the skills learned this semester. Confederation is pleased to donate all proceeds to the Sudbury Food Bank and the parents were pleased to see all of the valuable skills their children have learned. Great work Chargers!

Parents must confirm student attendance for in school or online learning When classes resume on September 8, 2020, Rainbow Schools will re-open for in-class ins...truction in elementary and secondary schools with enhanced health and safety protocols. To ensure parents/guardians make decisions that work for their children and family, distance learning will be offered for students who choose not to attend in person. Parents/guardians are required to confirm whether their children will be attending in person or online by completing a Confirmation of Attendance form by Friday, August 21, 2020. Parents/guardians must complete one form per child. The form can be accessed online at bit.ly/rdsbreopening. There is also a link to the form from the board website. If not attending in-person, students will be expected to attend school remotely on a full-time basis with access to learning materials posted online as well as synchronous (live) and asynchronous (pre-recorded) learning opportunities throughout the day. Attendance will be taken daily. Elementary students will have timetables to connect remotely/synchronously with a distance learning teacher. Secondary students will connect synchronously (live to the classroom) with their regular classroom teachers. Technology will be provided, as required, for distance learning. Please note: The earliest time students who opt for distance learning can reintegrate into face-to-face instruction will be at mid-term in November. Rainbow District School Board has produced a Reopening Guide to help parents/guardians make an informed decision. The guide can be accessed at rainbowschools.ca and includes an overview of health and safety protocols being implemented in all schools to limit the spread of COVID-19. https://www.rainbowschools.ca//parents-must-confirm-stude/

June 17, 2020 Devices on Loan to Students and Summer Learning Dear Parents/Guardians:... As we enter the last two weeks of school in what has been anything but a typical school year, I would like to thank you for your resilience, your patience and, above all, your support as we made the transition from learning in class to learning at home. Learning together while safely apart has taught us that we have the ability to adapt to change when called upon to do so. I am proud of how we have all responded to this new way of living and learning always with safety first and foremost. Of course, a key component of our continuity of education plan was access to technology. We very quickly and very safely distributed more than 2,000 devices to students in order to facilitate teacher-led distance learning. We will be asking students to return their devices, but not just yet. We want students to keep them over the summer to continue learning on their own or, if they are enrolled in a summer learning program or secondary school course, continue learning with teacher support. There are a few exceptions. Students graduating from Grade 12, moving out of Sudbury, Espanola or Manitoulin Island, transferring to another school board or attending Barrydowne College must return their devices after classes end on June 26. Schools will arrange for the safe return of devices. You may also email [email protected] we will follow up. In order to ensure students are on track to graduate, we are offering virtual remedial and upgrading courses for secondary students. We are also offering opportunities for students to earn new credits. To learn more, visit rainbowschools.ca. While visiting the board website, I invite you to read our feature stories on bringing learning to life during school closures. Our staff responded with care, compassion and creativity. Our students and families embarked on this journey with an open mind and an open heart. Stay safe and stay connected. We will chat again soon. June 22, 2020 Report cards and graduation Dear Parents/Guardians:... This is it! It’s the final week of school in a school year that combined in class instruction with at home and teacher-led distance learning. On behalf of staff in Rainbow Schools, I would like to thank students and families for persevering. You did it and we are very proud of you. For the Class of 2020, this is a graduation like no other. You have demonstrated that you have the capacity to adapt to changing circumstances which is a skill that will serve you well as you move forward in learning and in life. We look forward to celebrating your achievements with you, your family and friends when it is safe to come together again. Until then, the entire community joins with us in saluting the graduates of Rainbow Schools. We asked community leaders to share their good wishes and words of wisdom with you. You can read this tribute to the Class of 2020 on our website later this week. We also invite you to take a look at our feature stories, bringing learning to life during school closures. The end of the school year, as always, comes with report cards. This year, report cards will be mailed to all homes the first week of July as part of our ongoing COVID-safe practices. And we remind all students and families to remain vigilant and continue to follow the guidance of Public Health to limit the spread of the virus. For students who are participating in the Summer Learning Program or e-Learning, our staff look forward to joining you online to further develop skills in literacy and numeracy and, at the secondary level, offer students opportunities to earn credits towards their diploma. Looking ahead, we are planning for the safe re-opening of schools with three possibilities as guided by the Ministry of Education and Public Health normal school day with enhanced public health protocols, modified school day to allow physical distancing and cohorts of students, and at home learning. The adapted model could include alternate day or alternate week attendance, staggered bell times and recess, and different transportation arrangements, with safety first and foremost. We will share more information as we assess the situation closer to the start of school. Have a safe summer! https://www.rainbowschools.ca/parents/coronavirus/
