"Here’s a fun fact: Did you know that every human on the planet has mental health? We don’t need scary statistics to remind us that if you’re human, you have a brain, mind, and body that needs you to manage essential care practices to support overal...l well-being. Taking care of ourselves is an important step in managing any of the afflictions that can creep up in times of stress, both physical and mental, as our bodies and minds are so closely connected. In fact, there are a couple of things you should know about stress and its impact and more importantly, its management: 1) Stress is healthy. It is actually a mechanism that serves us, as a motivator and protector; 2) Distress, the level of stress that is unhealthy, acts as part of a cycle. It begins by nagging at us in the back of our minds, to bringing attention to things we need to do. When not managed, it can create anxiety, worry, or even panic. Unmanaged stress can prevent us from sleeping and cause us to feel secondary emotions like anger, sadness, and fear. When these secondary emotions take over, they can be overwhelming, and THAT is where self-care is essential. If we can prioritize self-care ahead of the overwhelming emotions, AND make it a part of our weekly or monthly schedule, we protect overall health and contribute to empowering ourselves to manage tough stuff.
