Bees are pretty incredible! Here in BC there are over 500 different species of bees! Another interesting fact is that solitary bees are more efficient than honey bees in pollinating plants, but can’t fly as far. So what’s the difference between solitary bees and social bees? Social Bees include bumble bees and honey bees (pictured here bottom). Honey bees are known to make honey and wax. Bumble bees also make honey and wax but only enough for their small colony (50-200 bees).... Social bees have a cast system which includes one queen, a larger percentage of female workers and male drones in the spring. Solitary Bees include leafcutter, carpenter, miner, and mason bees (pictured here top) to name a few. These bees live alone and they don’t typically sting. They don’t fly far from their nest but solitary bees visit a variety of flowers to collect pollen and nectar for their eggs. Solitary bees use holes, hollow reeds, dig tunnels in the ground or burrow in wood. The material they seal the cell with depends on the species of bee. For example, leafcutter bees seal each cell with leaves, miner bees use mud. Once the cell is sealed with the food and egg, the mother does not return. The egg will now pupate and then hibernate until next spring when it begins the cycle again.

In store shopping and curbside pick-up update As you look for the perfect gift for that special someone and you are planning on coming by for a visit this season, here’s an update on what we’re doing in store at Honeybee Centre to keep everyone as safe as possible: We are limiting the number of customers in the store at one ... time. We have plenty of space inside and waiting space outdoors (if needed) on our covered patio. We have mandated a mandatory mask policy for all customers and staff members at all times, which aligns with our provincial health order. Complimentary masks are available if you are without one. We continue to sanitize our high traffic areas frequently throughout the day (doorknobs, debit / credit terminals, counter tops bathrooms and more). Plenty of signage is available to encourage proper distancing and discourage the handling of products. There are plenty of hand sanitization stations available throughout our store. We are monitoring all staff for symptoms of COVID on a daily basis. We ask you to order online and stay home if you are showing symptoms or are feeling unwell. As an alternative for those who are unable or uncomfortable entering the store, we have a curbside pick-up option available. Curbside Pick-up: Visit honeybeecentre.com/curbside to view our menu and prices. Call 604-575-2337 to place your order. Have your credit card ready as we will be taking payments over the phone to limit contact. Let us know when you’ll be coming by to pick it up. (At least 30 minutes after your order is placed). Call us at 604-575-2337 when you arrive and let us know what type of vehicle you are in. One of our staff members will bring your order out for you. Drive away happy! We also have local delivery and shipping options that you can use without having to leave the house. We look forward to continuing to serve you with fresh, locally sourced honey! Honeybee Centre~

Cold and Flu Season is Here and We can Help Now that the calendar has turned to Autumn, it means shorter days, cool crisp air, but also the arrival of Cold & Flu season. There are a number of beehive products that are great for your immune system when it comes to prevention and treatment of seasonal ailments, and the one we want to talk about today is propolis.... Propolis is produced by bees and is a combination of beeswax, honey and tree resins mixed with bee-produced enzymes. The bees use propolis to protect the hive from bacteria, fungus and viruses. For us, propolis has natural anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and antioxidant properties. It can be used as a remedy for cold and flu symptoms, and is also excellent for boosting the immune system as a preventative measure. You’ll find propolis in a number of our products that you can find in store and on our website. http://www.honeybeecentre.com//health-and-nutrit/propolis

A little bit of bee knowledge to start your weekend: Entrance Reducers As the weather gets colder, we have added Entrance Reducers to the bee hives. At this time of year, by shrinking the entrance to the hive, it makes it easier for the bees to defend from intruders(wasps) who are hoping to rob the bees of their honey.
