# The key to creating a high-performing, aesthetically pleasing image with this technique is - and we cannot stress this enough - simplicity. From theme to palette to textures to items - keep it simple. Theme: The opportunity to elaborate on complex ideas is available in the caption, so keep your image clean. Favourite gym kicks > What's in my gym bag?... Palette: Well-executed monochromatic palettes are always a mood but not often feasible. For most flat lay compositions, simplifying a palette means sticking to the same tone (pastel or jewel - not both, for example) or having 1 bold-coloured item among neutrals. Textures: Unless the theme itself is #textures (and you followed the palette advice) or you're a flat lay wizard - 2 is the max # of textures ever, period. #trustmeonthis Items: Less is more when it comes to staging a casual, haphazard-effect flat lay. If you want/need more than 2 or 3 items; simplicity is achieved through organization. We're talking Rule of Thirds, knolling, negative space and framing techniques.
