Hop yard put to bed with a nice layer of manure, now ready for next year. Many thanks to our neighbours Shawn and Victoria Crichton and their horses at Braeloch Farms.
An article from Joe Wiebe, noted Canadian beer writer, about this year's harvest at Hope Bay Hop Farm. https://www.pressreader.com//time/20201001/281629602720745
Ready to enjoy our very special Wolf Vine beer from Hoyne Brewing Company with our dinner on the deck this evening. And yes, we have just a few hops left on the bines, makes for a nice decorative touch. Cheers!

Jack Knox has a good handle on Pender life
Thanks to all of our friends and neighbours who made Hop Harvest 2020 at Hope Bay Hop Farm such a success. Very special thanks to Sean Hoyne and Chantal Hoyne, Hoyne Brewing Company for their ongoing support and generosity. We also had a special visit from Jack Knox, Victoria Times Colonist, who joined us to help harvest and to chat with our pickers, to better understand what makes Pender so special. Pender's own Davy Rippner aka Leathersmithe documented our harvest with many photos which I am sure that you will enjoy (if you want to use a photo for publication, please make sure to attribute to Davy). https://leathersmithe.smugmug.com//2020-Hope-Bay-Hops-Har/
The last time we were at Syrens Bistro at Poets Cove Resort, Spa & Marina, we really enjoyed the Poke Nachos. So we found a recipe and made them at home! And what goes better with our nachos than a Hoyne Brewing Company Dark Matter beer in a tall can, as we relax and look over the hop yard.
Good teamwork with the temporary farm workers this morning, dealing with any pests. Cones are developing fast and look good. Hoyne Brewing Company fresh hop Wolf Vine beer will be here again this fall!
Thousands of temporary farm workers busy dealing with any pesky aphids...
Just had 5000 temporary farm workers arrive, they go to work tonight...
It's definitely a jungle out there...hops are at the top and forming lovely laterals. So, it is also time to bring in the temporary farm workers to deal with any insect pests. Also looks like we might be harvesting a bit earlier this year, given the start we have so far. So that means that you will be able to enjoy Hoyne Brewing Company Wolf Vine beer just a little bit sooner!
May 24, and the hops are healthy and happy!
Fantastic light in the hop yard tonight! Celebrating the completion of stringing the hops in both fields. Hops are already crawling up the strings as high as 4 feet high - Hoyne Brewing Company Wolf Vine will be great this year!
It is hop stringing time, so it must be spring! Watch for something new coming in the next couple of months - we will be trying something different to deal with the grass and weeds that get in the way, as well as a new way to strip off the bottom leaves of the plants to improve air circulation. Stay tuned!
An early morning panorama shot at Hope Bay Hop Farm. Hop shoots are breaking through, hop twine is ready, and the sun is shining!
Just part of the group that came out for the Wolf Vine Dinner at the Bistro on Saturday. Many thanks to Sean and Chantal Hoyne, owners of Hoyne Brewing Company who joined us for the dinner and who have given such great support to us at Hope Bay Hop Farm, to Port Browning Marina Resort for hosting the event, great service from our server Kristen Gardiner, great food from chef Gord Stewart. Sean told a number of stories about the craft brewing industry and introduced the beer that was paired with each food course. Fantastic beer, fantastic food, and fantastic friends and neighbours!
