Oncology Esthetics A cancer diagnosis is life changing. As one navigates through surgical intervention, chemotherapy/biotherapy and radiation therapy, shifts in physical and emotional health occur. Side effects from cancer treatment touch all aspects of the patient's life, including emotional and psychosocial issues, body-image issues, work-related and financial issues. Many patients find themselves overwhelmed and they can benefit greatly from supportive care. Cancer treatme...nts can lead to numerous skin related side effects. Therapy Oncology Esthetics can provide relief, easing symptoms and skin reactions, improving skin and overall health and restoring a sense of well-being. Complimentary therapies such as esthetics are not typically incorporated into standard patient care in most doctor's offices, hospital or cancer centres. Certified Oncology Estheticians can complete the circle of care that is provided to patients. Oncology Estheticians' services compliment conventional cancer treatments. The purpose is not to treat the cancer itself but to treat the person as a whole. Complementary therapies help a person cope with cancer, its treatment or side effects and to feel better. See more

Managing the side effects of Chemotherapy Mouth and throat The goal of chemotherapy is to destroy cancer cells. Traditional chemotherapies work by killing cells that divide rapidly. As they wipe out fast-growing cancer cells, though, they can also damage fast-growing healthy cells. Damage to blood cells, for example, leads to side effects such as anemia, fatigue, and infections. Chemotherapy can also damage the cells that line the mucous membranes found throughout the body, ...including those inside the mouth, throat, and stomach. This leads to mouth sores, diarrhea, or other problems with the digestive system. And damage to cells at hair roots, or hair follicles, leads to hair loss. Take these steps: Brush your teeth and tongue after each meal and before you go to bed. Use a very soft toothbrush or cotton swabs. Use toothpaste or gel that has fluoride in it. Every 3 hours during the day, mix together: 1 cup warm water, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Take small sips and swish them around in your mouth. Then rinse with plain water. Keep your mouth and lips moist. Use a lip balm. Sip water or suck ice chips. Try drinking through a straw. Eat soft, bland foods. Choose foods that are soft, wet, and easy to swallow. When your mouth is sore, try cooked cereals, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs. Soften food with gravy, sauce, or other liquids. Let food cool down if hot food hurts your mouth. Dont have things that can make your mouth hurt. Dont drink orange, lemon, tomato, or grapefruit juice. Dont drink alcohol, such as beer or wine. Dont eat crunchy or spicy foods. Dont have foods or drinks that have sugar in them, such as candy & soft drinks. Dont smoke cigarettes or use other tobacco products.

I wear my Daffodil for the loss of my loved ones. Who are you wearing it for? On Daffodil month Canadians wear a daffodil pin throughout the month of April to show their support for the thousands of people who are living with cancer and to remember those who have lost their precious life. April 27th is the actual Daffodil day. On this important day we encourage Canadians to do something special for those living with cancer or to contribute in some way to the fight against this disease.

What is Leukemia (Blood Cancer)? Leukemia is cancer of the white blood cells and the cells from which they develop. The word cancer refers to diseases in which certain cells in the body become abnormal and grow unchecked. In this case, the abnormal cells are white blood cells and their precursors. Leukemia cells do not function normally and cannot do what normal white blood cells do, such as fight infections. In addition to the abnormal cells in the blood, other, normal eleme...nts such as platelets and red cells may be decreased, leading to anemia and clotting problems. The most common types of leukemia are: Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia The cancer begins in immature lymphocytic blood cells and progresses very quickly. This is the most common type of leukemia in young children. It also occurs in adults, especially those over age 65. This cancer is sometimes called acute lymphoblastic leukemia or acute lymphoid anemia. Acute Myelogenous Leukemia The cancer begins in immature granulocytic blood cells and progresses very quickly. This type occurs in both adults and children. Other names include acute myelocytic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, acute granulocytic leukemia, or acute nonlymphocytic leukemia. Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) This cancer, also known as chronic lymphoid leukemia, begins in more mature lymphocytic blood cells and progresses gradually, often taking years to develop to the stage that the patient has symptoms other than a change in the number of white cells in his blood count. This type most often occurs in adults over age 55. It sometimes occurs in younger adults, but rarely occurs in children. Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia The cancer begins in more mature granulocytic blood cells and progresses gradually, sometimes taking years to develop to the stage that the patient develops symptoms. This occurs mainly in adults, but may occur in a very small number of children. Sometimes called chronic myeloid leukemia or chronic granulocytic leukemia. Erythroleukemia This is a cancer of the cells that produce red cells and is extremely uncommon. Erythroleukemia may also be called di Gugliemos syndrome, after the physician who first described it. The cause of leukemia is unknown, but research shows that certain risk factors are associated with the disease, and the risk factors will vary with the type of leukemia See more

Skincare During Radiation & Chemo Therapy Everyone has heard about potential nausea and hair loss, but most people are unaware of what may happen to their skin. A 2010 study by Supportive Care in Cancer found that nearly a third of cancer patients reported unexpected Dry Skin and Skin Irritation. Simply by being aware of the potential side effects, people battling cancer can minimize the psychological stress often caused by these skin issues and irritations. What is Cancer? "Cancer" is the general name for a group of more than 100 diseases that affect the body at a cellular level. Although there are many kinds of cancer, they all start because abnormal cells divide and grow out of control. Normal body cells grow, divide and die and are replaced by new cells. Cancer cell growth is different from that of normal cells. Instead of dying, cancer cells continue to grow and form new, abnormal cells. Cancer cells can also invade (grow ...into) other tissues and organs, something that normal cells do not do. When cancer spreads in this way, the condition is called metastasis. Why does cancer happen? Cells become cancerous or malignant because of damage to their DNAthis is called a cell mutation. In a normal cell, when DNA gets damaged the cell either repairs the damage or the cell dies. In cancer cells, the damaged DNA is not repaired, but the cell doesn't die like it should. Instead, this cell goes on making new cancer cells. Cancer is a disease with a long latency period. This means that it may take years from the time of the first mutation to when signs of the disease appear. This is why cancer screening is so important: to detect cancer earlier, before we can see or feel it.

When one thinks about Cancer, the number one colour that comes to mind is pink and the first thing we all assume is breast cancer. But as statistics show in Canada the leading type of cancer is Lung cancer. The main reason why we dont hear much about it is the high profits on cigarette sales. Please keep in mind that Lung cancer is also the #1 cause of death in Canada.

What are Parabens and Why Should You Avoid Them? Parabens are chemical preservatives that were put in most of our cosmetic products back in the 1960s to fight bacteria and fungus. They are found in so many of our products. Parabens can be found in shampoos, moisturizers, shaving gels, cleansing gels, makeup, lotions, lip gloss, skin care, underarm deodorants, suntan lotion, hair spray, topical pharmaceuticals, toothpaste, and many more, while they are also used as food addi...tives. Parabens are a synthetic chemical preservative that allow skin care, and beauty products to have a long shelf life. Parabens are absorbed through the skin and from the gastrointestinal tract and blood. Most of the products we buy for everyday use contain some form of paraben: methylparabens, ethylparabens, propylparabens, butylparabens, isobutylparabens, and isopropylparabens. Why Are Parabens Bad? There have been studies that have linked parabens to cancer. Parabens mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers. Researchers have found parabens intact in breast tumors and believe there is a relationship between parabens and tumors. How to avoid them? Always examine labels before buying new products to make sure youre in the habit of making healthier purchases. Make your own personal care products with a few simple and natural ingredients Recognize the different names of parabens Shop at health food or natural food stores that sell toiletries and personal care products

What is Oncology Massage Therapy? Oncology massage is bodywork that has been specifically adapted to your particular cancer situation by a skilled therapist who has been specially trained in oncology massage. Using sound clinical judgment, each session is customized to meet your current needs at every stage of the cancer journey, i.e. at diagnosis, during treatment, years after recovery, remission, or end of life. Some cancer treatments can cause life long risk, so it is impo...rtant that you choose a therapist with advanced training who can provide effective and safe massage at every stage. Treatments such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and other medications can all take a vast toll on the body. The goal of oncology massage is to enhance natural healing and support the body during the process. Oncology massage can actually assist your own body in the healing process and help to reconnect the mind, body and spirit. Modern medicine affirms that quality of life is in direct correlation to the quality of the cancer experience. While traditional medicine is mainly focused on treating the disease, oncology massage is focused on treating the whole person: the physical, the spiritual, the mental, the emotional, the social and the psychological. No one should ever be turned away from receiving massage based on a history of cancer. There is ALWAYS an appropriate and safe massage for every person, provided your therapist is well trained in oncology massage.

YOGA AND ITS BENEFITS FOR CANCER PATIENTS What is Yoga? A 5,000-year-old practice based on Indian philosophy, yoga has gained popularity in many countries around the world. Yoga uses a combination of postures, rhythmic breathing, and meditation, and is said to contribute to our physical and mental well-being. Derived from the Sanskrit word "Yuj," yoga stands for the union, or joining together of body, mind, and spirit. Yoga is not considered a religious practice, but rather a... philosophy of creating an internal environment that promotes health and vitality. There are many types of yoga, but hatha yoga is the form of yoga most often referred to when people use the word yoga. With its slow, gentle movements, the practice of yoga may be possible for people who are otherwise limited in their activities due to fatigue, shortness of breath, and other symptoms of cancer and cancer treatment. Yoga can help you center your thoughts and maintain flexibility, but also has benefits specifically for people living with cancer. Symptoms of fatigue, insomnia, and pain can all lower your quality of life with cancer. In recent years the use of yoga has been evaluated in many studies looking at cancer symptoms. Some of the benefits that have been supported in at least a study or two include: Sleep and Insomnia: Yoga may help people with cancer who have difficulty falling asleep or remaining asleep. Fatigue: In a few studies, yoga was associated with a significant decrease in the fatigue related to cancer and cancer treatments. Anxiety: Through its centering activities and breathing practices, yoga may reduce the anxiety associated with cancer. Loss of Appetite: In some cases, yoga may result in an improvement when loss of appetite accompanies a cancer diagnosis. Pain: As a complementary treatment - that is, a treatment that is used along with conventional treatments such as pain medications - yoga may decrease pain associated with cancer. Stress: Yoga appears to have a role in stress reduction for people living with cancer, both clinically -- meaning that people have said they feel less stressed -- and as seen in markers of stress in the body. In a few small studies, yoga lowered blood cortisol levels in patients with breast cancer. Cortisol is a hormone that is secreted during stress and may play a role in the progression of cancer. Emotional Distress: Individuals living with cancer reported significantly less emotional distress related to their disease when they incorporated yoga into their weekly routine.
