My daughter is now seven years old. When I was seven, I was sexually assaulted by my maternal grandfather. The fact that this happened to me is not remotely sh...ocking. MANY of my friends have similar stories. This happens to one in three females. And this horrifying statistic is only based on the abuse that actually gets reported; the real numbers are much higher. The rage I feel at the moment is hard to put into words but I will try, because it's so very important; I have seen so many comments on social media posts in light of Sarah's devastating disappearence and murder, which indicate that we STILL don't get it. To all the sweet, good, kind, loving, gentle men out there - how are you helping? How are you making this better? Have you talked to your sons about porn? Have you helped around the house to show your boy that domestic work is not woman's work? Have you jumped in when your mates have made sexist jokes or demoralised women in the name of good banter? Have you made efforts to reach out to - and mentor - the fatherless boys in your community? Because, sweet men, this is your work. And it's the most important work you will ever do. The other day my younger son told me that his older brother had given him a talking to on the bus ride to school. Will had explained to Toby that life would be easier for them than it would be for their little sister. That she would have to fight harder for things than they would. That she might get hurt by boys and men, and that it was their job to protect her by talking to boys and men about how women were equal. Toby would jump off a cliff if his older brother told him to, so he nodded in feverent agreement. I smiled when he relayed their chat to me at bedtime. These conversations our boys have don't just come out of thin air. They don't just understand all this automatically. I have put the work in. But more importantly, Rupert has put the work in. Equality is a constant narrative in our home which has become threaded into our family values - which are now deeply embedded into all of our kids. In our family we now talk about porn and masturbation and periods and racism and sexism over the dinner table as easily as we talk about what dinner to put on the dinner table. Why? Because our sons are white, able bodied males who hold onto more privilege than they know. And because the average age that boys start looking at porn is 11 which means that the conversations have start beforehand. Parents; don't let your sweet boys out into the scary-ass internets without talking to them about porn and sex and stats first. Don't let them into locker rooms without talking about how to stand up for their sisters and mothers in conversations. How are boys supposed to navigate this darkness if they are not guided by us? My grandfather was not guided. He was left alone to learn from the sick and twisted societal narrative that STILL saturates the very air we breathe. Don't let your boys turn into my grandfather. Of course not all men harm women. BUT ALL MEN HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY to change the current system that normalises violence against women. They have to dismantle it, collectively, bit by bit. And ALL MEN have to do this is many different ways, and every day, for as long as they shall live. And ALL MEN have to do this for the sake of seven year old me, and for my daughter, and for their daughters, and for their wives and for their sisters and for their mothers. And for Sarah Everard. And for all of the other millions and millions and millions of women who have been abused for millennia.

Christianity has no inherent right to exist for indigenous people in this hemisphere. ...Survivors want us to remember where, the legacies began.... Title ~ Nu...n Washing the Hair of a Male Student, 1926. The boy is, possibly Lazare C. and the nun is Sister Francois, a First Aid , worker. Whether you had lice or not, we all had the ‘coal oil’ head treatment. Guy Indian Residential School, Sturgeon Landing, Manitoba. ~ The first thing the nuns did was cut and wash the children’s hair as part of the school’s practice of wiping away students’ aboriginal identities began boy’s braided hair, which often had spiritual significance, was cut. For many who wore braids for cultural reasons, the only time they cut their hair is when they are grieving the loss of loved ones. ~ In keeping with the promise to civilize the little pagan, they went to work and cut off my braids, which, incidentally, according to the Assiniboine traditional custom, was a token of mourning the closer the relative, the closer the cut. After my haircut, I wondered in silence if my mother had died, as they had cut my hair close to the scalp. ~ Daniel Kennedy, Lebret Residential School Survivor testimony. The Guy (St. Therese) Indian Residential School (Treaty 6), managed by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate of the Roman Catholic Church (Archdiocese of Keewatin-Le Pas), began operations in 1926 at Sturgeon Landing, Saskatchewan. By 1951 it was woefully overcrowded with a rather serious epidemic affecting 19 boys. On September 4, 1952, after sparks from a torch being used by maintenance staff ignited a fire in the engine room, the school burned to the ground. The school was then relocated to Manitoba. A temporary school opened in The Pas, Manitoba and a new school building opened in 1959, located in Clearwater Lake, Manitoba. See more

Sex, was not talked about in my parents generation... however, as a child many of us saw and experienced this behaviour way too soon. Put into context the trauma our grandparents and parents experienced in their childhood. Thus, trauma that is not transformed is... Transferred. Breaking the silence in a safe environment with support is a step towards healing.

"In the darkness of a boarding school night, my mother said she could hear the other kids weeping for their parents. The children were forbidden to speak Lakota by the missionaries. So they spoke the language in their prayers. A thousand prayers from a thousand lonely hearts."

I am honoured to have participated in this public video with the BC Federation of Foster Parents this past spring in Vancouver. Shakes the Dust Hope Consulting facilitates in creating safe spaces when engaging and working with communities. PLEASE WATCH... near and dear to my heart. I WORKED WITH foster parents for the first 15 or so years of my career with foster families... the children and the biological parents. I was a support person an advocate a trainer and pre servic...e as well as delivering specialized issues and most importantly a trainer of culture to non indigenous families who would be raising indigenous children. I supported biological families to address the many hoops they were made to jump through and to assist them to heal in a meaningful way. I also trained provincially and inter provincially on issues related to foster care. I also developed programs that would assist youth in ageing out so they had the competencies to live on their own independently. Foster parents open their hearts and their homes and need support. CHILDREN NEED A POSITIVE SENSE OF THEIR IDENTITY AND INDIGENIETY. BIo parents need support mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally and financially to be able to raise their own children. CHILDREN NEVER LOSE LOVE FOR THEIR OWN FAMILY NO MATTER THE CASE. 99.9% of children in care will return to their own people so let's maintain a positive bridge. My love to those that love these children. -Bev Visit our website for more information. www.shakesthedusthopeconsulting.com
