Abdi "Hope" Women's business cooperative makes some great progress. The graduates from the Hopethiopia Trades Training program have made some wonderful progress in establishing and setting up their own business cooperative. They have landed some nice contracts and are now making fashion outfits, leather goods, school uniforms, and PPE masks.... They are showing what is possible with great education and getting a good opportunity in life. The future is looking very bright for this exceptional group of women. See more

Women's IGA program success at Hopethiopia One of the groups that we have focused on for the last 2 years at Hopethiopia is the IGA (Income generating Activity) group. These 14 women come from very poor rural situations and have very little access to opportunity. However, we have been able to sponsor and encourage them to set up small business's. Not only have they been able to establish some very successful business's such as chicken and small animal husbandry, vegetable f...arming etc. but they have also saved funds to use cooperatively and have formed close friendships. They have built a level of trust and have developed a "sisterhood" that is very encouraging and life giving to the group. Our Branch office director, Megersa, has shown great leadership in teaching and encouraging the group and we look forward to more success stories like this in the future. See more

Great progress at Hope Women's Business Cooperative. The graduates from the last Hopethiopia Trades Training program have now set up their own business cooperative. Their name is the Abdi which means Hope. They now have some contracts to produce masks, back packs, and uniforms and are well on the way to achieving success. It is amazing to see the transformation that has occurred in their lives and they are very grateful to all that have made this possible. Most of them had very little to no previous education with very little possibility of attaining success in the future. Now they have a trade, a business opportunity, and great potential for the future.

A big thanks to the Zonal Supervisory team. Once in a while, government teams come out to our project sites to check on the activities and to monitor the progress. Yesterday the supervisory team was onsite in Harbu Chulule, Ethiopia and they had a great time visiting the Children's Village, the new sanitation complex, and event the new Women's "Hope Business cooperative" that has been set up by the graduates of our last trades training program. They had some excellent feedback and were able to see all the progress even in the midst of the very challenging Covid-19 pandemic. We are very grateful for their encouragement and presence and looking forward to great things in the coming years.

INSPIRED ALBERTANS: Hopethiopia’s Co-Founders Last evening Ralph and Glenda Dubienski were featured in CTV’s Inspired Albertans segment because of the work they are doing to further our cause in Ethiopia and Rwanda. What an honour to have them featured at the end of this rather unforgettable year! https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/video... In the telling of their story, the renowned broadcaster Darrel Janz shared of the impact made through the partnership of Pat and Michelle Ward, and Paul and Kristin Van Ginkel. By creating the Hopethiopia Charity Calendar every year for the past 10 years, their efforts have raised over $1,000,000 for our charity! The partnership with these lavishly supportive friends causes us to humbly (and tearfully) pause and reflect upon the enormous blessings that continue to flow through all our sponsors, volunteers, mentors, advisors, friends and family. The support of Pat and Michelle, Paul and Kristin, is representative of the giving of the many faithful sponsors of HOPE’s projects and people. Yes, it is representative of your support. This has been a most trying year, but you have remained with us. We could not possibly express the fullness of our gratitude. Just be assured: you have done great things to transform the lives of hundreds of the world’s most marginalized. Thank you for your continual, thoughtful and loving support. We remain forever grateful. If you would like to make a donation and receive one (or more) of these stunning calendars, please go to Paul Van Ginkel’s website link: https://paulvanginkel.com/news.aspx. Or, you can select the 2021 Charity Calendar Fund on Hopethiopia’s CanadaHelps page at: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/hopethiopia/ Thank you again!

Zerihun A Champion of Hope The Ethiopian national director for Hopethiopia is Zerihun. He has now been the country director since 2012 and he has a real passion for our beneficiaries as well as the environment. He really cares for the Kids and Mom's at the Children's Village and has had a great impact in leading them as they have grown up over the last few years. He also has a wealth of knowledge in the area of reforestation and has brought much of his previous experience to make a massive impact on the local environment. Great restoration can be seen at the Hopethiopia projects as the trees are all growing and much biodiversity is returning. A great many thanks go out to this true Champion of Hope.

One of the most dedicated and greatest Champions of Hope is Dr. Asrat Dr. Asrat has been connected with Hopethiopia since the very early days and even participated in our very first health care mission in 2011. Dr. Asrat is an Ethiopia cataract surgeon who is very gifted in his skills and is passionate about life and anything to do with eyes. Even before it was common to volunteer in Ethiopia, he paved the way and gave huge amounts of time and resources to be able to help th...ose that are in great need. Ethiopia is one of the countries that has a very high level of blindness due to cataracts and Trachoma infection. However, in our relatively remote Hopethiopia project area we have been able to set up an eye surgery and treatment centre where thousands of patients have received the precious gift of site. He truly is one of our champions of hope and we are very grateful to have been able to work together over the last 9 years. See more

CHAMPIONS OF HOPE: Bea and Ralph Coombs As we reflect upon the first 10 years of Hopethiopia’s history, we realize HOPE would not be where it is today without the Champions of Hope. While our dear friend President Girma was so very instrumental to our establishment in Ethiopia, it was Glenda Dubienski’s parents, Bea and Ralph Coombs, who championed the cause in Rwanda. From the first time their daughter shared her dream, vision and passion for Hopethiopia’s expansion into ...Rwanda, Bea and Ralph prayerfully and holistically provided support. The plight of marginalized Rwandans had quickly become near and dear to their hearts. Their first gift of sewing machines grew into a tailoring school, and blossomed into freedom and empowerment of more than 120 disenfranchised women. And then, investing in these women’s children by providing school fees, meant the blessing would be generational. When HOPE Home was opened, Bea and Ralph helped feed, clothe and ensure proper health care for our newly rehabilitated men. Though Bea has passed away and is now in the presence of her Saviour, Ralph continues to pour into the mission. Whether he is visiting our beneficiaries in Rwanda, sharing wisdom and encouragement with HOPE’s Dream Team, promoting the cause, funding projects, or just putting the final details on the masks our ladies made for the Paul Hardy Mask Project (https://paulhardydesign.com), his input is vital. The contributions made by this exceptionally loving couple are immeasurable. Hopethiopia would not be where it is today without them. We certainly cannot thank Bea and Ralph Coombs enough. They truly are Champions of Hope.

HOPEthiopia 07.09.2019

World Soil Day Dec 5 2020 Today we celebrate the importance of one of our precious resources... good soil. At the Hopethiopia projects in Ethiopia and Rwanda we are working very hard to make our soils and land healthier and more productive. After lands that have been heavily overgrazed and depleted in resources, we now see health coming back to the land. ... The planting of thousands of Acacia tress are fixing Nitrogen reenergizing the soils. Using water conservation techniques, permaculture, composting, mulching, and many other concepts we have seen a remarkable turnaround in the soil health and education of our beneficiaries and local farmers is making a big difference. Lets all work together to restore health and make a greener world. See more

Tremendous progress as we move from one country to another. Leaving Egypt and heading east.

HOPEthiopia 24.07.2019

Champions of Hope Over the past 10 years that Hopethiopia has been bringing hope to Ethiopia and Rwanda there have been certain individuals and organizations that have come alongside to provide encouragement and support without which it would have been impossible to accomplish all that we have been able to do. One of these true champions was the late President Girma Woldegiorgis of Ethiopia. From the very first meeting that the co-founders had in 2008, he wholeheartedly suppo...rted our efforts and encouraged us in whatever way he could. He truly was a champion of the environment, strongly advocating for much needed reforestation efforts which have seen a dramatic turnaround in the health of the biodiversity and environment. He cared very much for his people and loved to entertain our beneficiaries, the children from the Children’s Village, the Hopethiopia scouts, and the many volunteer mission teams that joined us from around the world. His doors were always open. He even visited our project site many years ago and planted the very first tree on our project site that came from the Palace nursery in Addis Ababa. We truly are very thankful for the support of the late President Girma and called him a close friend and a true Champion of Hope. See more

A huge thank you from Ethiopian leaders. Hopethiopia is very grateful to receive all of these certificates of appreciation and recognition from different government offices from the local to the regional levels. We have been very actively engaged during the Covid-19 pandemic to provide assistance the the communities and our beneficiaries in both Ethiopia and Rwanda. Many creative and very practical ideas have come up both from our Canadian leaders as well as our on the ground... Ethiopian and Rwandan teams. Ideas such as; mask production, distribution of free water, sanitizer and PPE provision, feeding programs and many other ideas have all come up. Megersa, the Hopethiopia Children's Village director, accepted these certificates on behalf of Hopethiopia. We would also like to acknowledge our many funding partners that have provided the much needed funds to allow us to provide such excellent services and resources. To the many people that have sacrificed so many of their personal resources, in the midst of their own hardship during Covid, we send our sincere appreciation and thanks for your great generosity. There is so much more need as we move into our second wave in Ethiopia and Rwanda. The need like here in North America will be greater the next time around. So please consider supporting our efforts by contributing to the Covid-19 Response Africa fund. Your support will make a great difference in allowing us to help out in the best way possible. Wonderful video of the Ethiopia projects Once in a while we get to see what our teams are posting about Hopethiopia. It is such a massive blessing to have so many teams come out and work at our projects in both Ethiopia and Rwanda. The attached video just shows what one recent team experienced and we were truly blessed by their presence and great generosity of time, love, and fun. Typically we have between 35 to 50 teams a year with over 1,000 people volunteering and donating... tens of thousands of person hours of work, love, and effort in any given year. Most teams are international and some are local Ethiopian and Rwandan. To all of you a great many thanks, we could not do what we do without you. Of course during Covid-19 it has been tough around the world. Most international teams have drastically decreased in number. However, many, many teams are in the wings just waiting to be mobilized. So be patient and get ready. As the pandemic settles down we will be reactivate the massive outpouring of love and help that is so greatly needed to bring Hope to so many. So from the kids and House Mom's at the Children's Village, our onsite staff, and all the workers in Ethiopia and Rwanda a HUGE thank you. They miss you so much a cannot wait to see the teams return. MEET ONE OF OUR HEROES This is Kanani. Kanani’s name means: to synchronize/to give up individual leanings in order to unite more effectively. For too long circumstances did not allow Kanani to live up to his name. The challenges that came with being an uneducated, homeless, orphaned, addict seemed entirely insurmountable. About 5 years ago, after graduating from the government run Iwawa Rehabilitation Centre, Kanani came to live at HOPE’s residence for orphaned and homeles...s grads. He arrived determined to take advantage of all HOPE had to offer to ensure he made lasting and positive changes in his life. After working so hard to overcome his addictions he wouldn’t let anything keep him down, not even chronic illness. Kanani was the first of his cohort to find a job, save enough money to rent a house and move out on his own. Today, Kanani is the House Brother at HOPE’s men’s residence, which means he manages the home and helps the residents heal from their many hurts and losses. Kanani is at the heart of the home, as he cultivates and nurtures a brotherhood. Kanani is helping our young men to reject the debilitating lies addiction declares: you are alone, you are unworthy, you are unlovable. Kanani’s words and actions counter those deceptions by reinforcing the truth: you belong, you are unconditionally loved. Kanani has sacrificed a lot to ensure these young men find family. His powerful name now seems quite prophetic! And as he has served his brothers so well, his reputation has grown. The community sees him as a man of integrity and a strong role model.
