Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in recent weeks at Horizon weve decided to reassess our understanding of the role of businesses in our community, and more releva...nt, what our responsibilities are as business owners in times of local, national, and worldwide crisis. We have come up with two lists that outline these beliefs: The role of business in our communities: - To provide a necessary service that enriches a community - To set an example of integrity and honesty - To encourage diversity and creativity within the business ecosystem - To hold up and promote the less fortunate members of our society The role of business in dealing with a crisis: - Help to reinforce our communities - Be a source of reliable information - Use our voice and visibility to promote positivity and togetherness - Be responsible leaders - Innovate, adapt. We are proud to announce that one of the results of this reflection is the creation of the Horizon Eco Builders COVID-19 Community Pledge. We will be donating 50% of our profits from the last week of every month to organizations working to prop up the less fortunate members of our communities. We pledge to continue this donation for the duration of the coming year, assessing the viability and the social impact of our initiative. Every 4 months we will revisit our commitment to insure that we aren't overextending ourselves financially and to allow the initiative to evolve once the effects of the pandemic are no longer being felt as acutely. This donation will serve the multi-purpose of demonstrating our gratitude to those brave people working on the front-lines of this crisis, giving us an outlet to help with the management of the crisis, and finally allowing the members of our community to get to know us a little better. The first organization we will be donating to is the DTES Response Fund. This organization is helping to slow the spread of COVID-19 amongst the most vulnerable members of our community in the downtown eastside of Vancouver, Canada. They have partnered with local and international corporations and companies such as TELUS, Lush, Fairmont Pacific Rim and Potluck amongst many others. The money is being distributed to initiatives that are managing issues specific to the downtown eastside during this crisis. Before and after pictures of our most recent project in North-Delta. This one provided us with a fun challenge and some good learning moments, as well as an opportunity to showcase some Eco-Friendly products and values. We used local cedar, Sansin Enviro Stain low VOC SDF stain and Silco Inc 100% Eco-friendly, low VOC caulking. ... We also car pooled, planned our material take-off meticulously so we only had to make one material run and brought our own lunches to reduce our carbon impact. We love the result, what do you think?

A project completed last summer. Elevated deck revamp with structural repairs and a full railing rebuild. We will be trying out a new brand of Eco-friendly Sealants/Adhesives made by Silco Incorporated over the next little while. Advertised as being 100% Eco-friendly and VOC compliant, while providing a paintable, mildew resistant, durable seal. We're excited to see them in action!

By planning whole communities around sustainability and energy efficiency we can put modular systems (Geothermal grids, Solar power grids) in place that will reduce overall energy consumption of houses by up to 70-80%, while significantly reducing the upfront cost to the homeowner. If the system is properly designed with growth in mind, future new builds would be able to easily tap into the existing system and immediately be a contributor to their sustainable community. Had a great time at the Climate Creatives Workshop + Party put on by the UBC Climate Hub at Patagonia Vancouver last night! Hard not to feel optimistic when surrounded by so many young, intelligent, motivated people who care so deeply about the Earth. Our first completed project. 3x12 fir Housed Stringer Staircase, all lumber power planed and finished with three coats of local low VOC stain from BRODA Stains & Coatings. We used custom .36" steel brackets for the tread to stringer attachments, and installed rubber gaskets at any wood to metal connection points to avoid rot. The lumber from the demolition of the previous staircase was donated and re purposed. From having to submit our first quote, to multiple design meetings and reworks, to working our butts off in the blazing heat. This project was a monumental learning experience, teaching us lessons that we will no doubt take with us as we progress on our adventure. As of today, humanity has officially used more resources this year than the planet can sustain. Although this is scary news, it also provides a shred of hope as it shows that we only have to cut down on our resource use by less than half for our way of life to be sustainable. The move towards sustainability starts with the small "insignificant" decisions we make everyday "Paper or plastic" " recycling or garbage". Lets come together to clean up our home, and start treating her right. Happy Earth Overshoot Day.

Not only are these houses sustainably constructed, but the material itself absorbs carbon dioxide and releases nitrogen back into the earth. On top of giving back to the earth, they also keep your health in mind. Theyre non-toxic, mildew-resistant, pest-free, flame resistant and chemical-free. We think those characteristics merit a little exposure and hype.
