Freya needs to learn some new tricks!

It’s been a (bit) spur of the moment that I suddenly have ANOTHER horse... and it’s made life a bit busier () but regardless, it’s been fun to spend time with ...the unicorn princess. Even though a horse might have a certain routine, or set of skills from their previous humans, things can often seem different with someone new. Teaching lessons adds an extra layer of responsibility to make sure I understand how each of my horses reacts to different environments and circumstances. So far Lilly and I have walked most of the regular routes, come across dogs, bikes, strollers, big trucks, scary highway underpasses, railway tracks, excavators, new horse trailers and so much more. She’s quite cute when she’s nervous and she snorts like a little pig. She’s shown me even when she reacts it’s not a big thing and she’s already turning to me when she’s not sure what to do in a situation. I’m looking forward to getting to know her more and more!

In lessons I teach about the importance of inspecting your tack. It can be a big safety risk if things break or stop working correctly. I was lucky today. I took my new horse Lilly out for a walk into a somewhat scary (for her) and new enviornment. She had moments with her head high in the air on alert, and a few nervous steps. ... Amazingly I decided not to take her usual halter and lead rope because they were wet. I didn’t notice until I brought it home to clean and dry that a piece holding it all together fell out. One head toss in the air wearing this halter, and we could have had a loose and panicked horse far from where she feels safe. I’ve never had a halter like this but today learned that now there’s another safetly check to make!
