The Industry Fight Against Online Retailers Like many industries, many hot tub product manufacturers & distributors favour ‘brick and mortar’ retailers, thus being discriminatory against online companies. Suppliers have done various things; mandatory Minimum Advertised Pricing (MAP), not allowing some products sold online, rules about not selling some products directly to online dealers, rumours about no warranty with online purchases (completely not true), unfair and illegal... agreements between manufacturers and distributors and other regular anti-competitive behaviour. Hot Tub Essentials has experienced all of these things first hand over the last 20 years. There are few major distributors in Canada, and the industry has influenced policies of US manufacturers in regard to Canadian companies. For example, some US companies won’t sell direct to Canadian dealers, even though they sell direct to dealers in the US. In addition, some major US manufactures recognize 2 distributors in Canada as Regional dealers (1 in Ontario and 1 in BC). These 2 distributors have separated Canada into 2 areas, so they have little pricing competition within their own areas. Now with Covid-19, the public is obviously favouring online purchasing more than ever and have pushed online sales through the roof. Will we see changes in how the industry treats online dealers, as more ‘brick and mortar’ businesses become dinosaurs, or will things go back to ‘normal’ once a vaccine is out?
