This is how a house becomes a home. Our designer spotlight for September features Byron Risdon who helped a young couple renovate their classic colonial in Mary...land. Byron shaped these interiors (photographed by Jamey McElvain-Whitman) with brilliant and nuanced colors from Aura Color Stories, a collection of 240 colors that exhibit an accentuated response to different lighting conditions. Are you a designer who wants to be in the spotlight? Interesting. Benjamin Moore products beat out Sherwin Williams based on the price point. Paint performance was the same, BM was lower priced.

Before: floral vinyl, strippable wallpaper. The kicker? No primer or painted surface underneath, just bare mudded, drywall. Strip, skim, prime & paint and voila.......the after.

Tried out this Nour Traditions 10mm microfibre sleeve complements of Mark from Brads Decor centre in Kentville, NS. This one is on par with my favourite microfibre sleeve from Simms. Performs better than the Dynamic Infinty series as far as application and durability. Very minimal roping when re-used. Easy to clean. A super fine, almost car like spray finish. Comparable to 3 coats from a foam roller only this does it in one! No shedding issues at all like some of the Infinity sleeves after re-use. I like this one and will get it again. You could even use this on furniture to get that spray like, no orange peel , finish. .

A little wallpapering yesterday. I have to say Norwall brand is still as bad as it was 20 years ago. Seam edges all dried out so they had to be glued. So thin it would tear if you tried to stretch it or even cut with a sharp Olfa knife. Every spec of fuzz and every wall imperfection showed through when dry. Turned out ok though.....

Tried the Pintar Microfiber 13mm sleeve last month. Good sleeve for first time use, but after only one cleaning the roping started and even after shaving the ends, still roped. The fibers also stiffened after more than one use in both BM & Pittsburgh Manor Hall, so its not a paint issue. This sleeve is almost identical to the Bennett brand blue fiber sleeve. Good for one time use, but not after that. This is just my opinion. I wont be using this one again, there are too many others out there that perform better for the same price point.

Tried this microfibre roller sleeve by Benjamin Moore last week and I have to say Im a little disappointed. I usually use a 10mm nap microfibre by Dynamic, Bennett or Simms (when I can find them), but this one was an odd 8mm nap. I used the sleeve in Regal eggshell and in the first couple of rolls, the material started separating from the sleeve. It did put the paint on smooth and evenly, leaving no roping or hollows, but a bit thinner than the 10mm competition. For the pric...e point at $6.99 retail for this sleeve Id stick with the Moore Max 10mm sleeve or one of the other brands, which are priced at $4.97 Simms Golden Touch ( no issues), $3.99 Bennett microfibre (roping and cleaning not A1) or the $3.49 Dynamic Infinity microfibre ( some roping after repeated use) all retail pricing. My opinion would be to use the Moore Max or Aura sleeve, they perform better and are the same price. See more

Updated this salon. Color stories series, In the Tropics, Coventry Gray and Intense White gave a lift to the tired red, orange and beige walls. Had to work a John Orgill shift as they were open days. Ashley, at Brads Decor picked the color scheme for this one........
