thank you @obsessivelyeverafter for this awesome OCD awareness sweater to having my first bouts of ocd in grade 6 to struggling today, i’m so glad there’s people and friends out there i feel comfortable talking to about my struggles and there’s people out there advocating for a mental illness that is crippling and grossly misrepresented in media/movies/etc, like a lot of other mental illnesses and issues are. i used to hear the phrase i’m so ocd because I like to organize ...things etc, pretty consecutively over my life... and i know it doesn’t come from a place of poking fun of an illness, it comes from not being informed! but if a routine or compulsion doesn’t cause you distress or affect your quality of life repeatedly, you’re probably using the term inappropriately... and it’s not just organizing and cleaning!!! i gave up driving for honestly the better part of five years because of something called harm ocd. this mental illness has clouded my judgment, my thoughts, multitude of areas of my life, my ability to live and love and has almost taken my life multiple times. all I can say is just be careful when you’re using terms of mental illness to describe something... for someone whose struggling and maybe new to trying to cope, it can be really harmful to hear their struggles diminished to a quirk you have, yenno?! i know we don’t mean to offend, i think it’s just important to fighting stigma to be careful of our language! Thank you for your time for anyone struggling, i promise it does get better. it does take time, but i never thought i’d be comfortable driving again and i do it everyday to get to work. if you’d have told me that a year ago, i would’ve told you to gtfo lol.
