A hot lunch program has been running @ HSS for the students here most of the year. Every Mon., Wed. & Fri. a free hot lunch is available, for instance burritos today, gooey fries, chicken pot pies, etc. HSS would like to thank the HSS PAC, Dungate Community Forest Ltd., & BV Credit Union for donations to make this program available; donations are always appreciated from the students/parents.

There will be early dismissals next week due to parent/teacher interviews (teachers will contact parents/guardians directly), please see the schedule below. Report cards will be available online on Fri., April 16th through the MyEd portal.

The PAC meeting scheduled for Mon., Jan. 11 @ 6:30pm will be held via a Zoom meeting. If you would like to receive an invite to this meeting (other than executive members), please leave your name below. Thank you.

Food Hamper Challenge Starting next week, there will be 1 box for Jr’s & 1 box for Sr’s. The group that brings the most non perishable items (to be donated to the Salvation Army) gets to eat first on the last day of school before Christmas holidays! Sr. Box in the office Jr. Box in the library

The Wolverwear order is being picked up today after work from Smithers and will be ready for tomorrow late a.m. for pick up

Good afternoon families of Twain Sullivan Elementary and Houston Secondary School, As you may have heard, the SD#54 schools in Houston are being reconfigured fo...r the 2021-2022 school year. Although change can be challenging, we are excited about the changes as we will be able to better meet the needs of our learners. There are many advantages to the upcoming change that we look forward to sharing with you. Please find attached an invitation and an information PowerPoint that will be used to guide this year's Facility Review and Reconfiguration meeting. The District is inviting you to join in the discussion regarding upcoming changes. This can be attended either in person or virtually. District Policy Consultation: The Board of Education is currently requesting feedback from it’s stakeholders on the following draft policy: Policy # 1.1310 Administrative Regulations The consultation letter and draft policy can be found on the District’s website located at www.sd54.bc.ca The current policy consultation period will run from October 19, 2020 to November 27, 2020.

To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, Houston Secondary School staff and students would like the community to be aware of the following protocols: 1. All visitors to Houston Secondary School must wear a mask upon entering the school and report immediately to the office. Visits should only be for urgent matters at this time as we are trying to limit the number of people in the building to students and staff members. If you need to come to the school to speak with someone, pl...ease phone 250-845-7217 to make an appointment. 2. All students and staff are required to wear a mask while in the hallways and when outside of their cohort. Students will be sent home if they come to school without a mask. There is a PAC meeting tonight in the HSS library @ 5:30pm, all parents are welcome and they are looking for a secretary. PAC funds benefit all of the students and they really need more parents to attend so please consider showing up tonight, they are quick meetings.

Today HSS hosted the Terry Fox run/walk and Pie in the face fundraising - what great staff and students! Record breaking fundraising this year for cancer research!

Dear Houston Secondary students and parents, Due to COVID-19, masks are mandatory for all students, staff, and visitors to the school while in the hallways. It is expected that students come to school with a mask and wear it at all times while in the hallways. If students do not have a mask or refuse to wear one, they will be sent home to get a mask or until they are willing to wear a mask while in the hallways. So far this year, the vast majority of students have been follow...ing the mask rule and doing a really good job of remembering to bring their mask and wear it. Another exciting Spirit Day is happening tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 8! Leadership has a full day of fun activities starting with a free pancake breakfast from 8:30-9 a.m. Students are encouraged to dress up in their house colors! Dismissal is 12:10.

PAC will hold meetings on the first Monday of every month. Next meeting is Nov.2nd 5:30 in the HSS library. All parents are welcome and they are currently looking for a Secretary. The meetings are short; it's important to have a few more parents at meetings to vote on donating gaming funds back to the students for field trips, team jerseys, etc. A big thank you to PAC for donating $250 towards new girls volleyball jerseys!

Due to the mandated COVID-19 orientation that took place on September 8th and 9th for all SD54 employees, SD54 had to relocate the September 8th, 2020 Professional Development Day to another time during the school year. At it’s regularly scheduled Board Meeting on September 29th, the Board of Education elected to move the September 8th, 2020 Professional Development Day to Monday, January 4th, 2021. PAC's first meeting will be Monday, Oct 5th @ 5:30 pm in the library. All parents are welcome! This is a great PAC, one meeting a month only!

October 2, 2020 Parent Teacher Conferences October 7th & 8th, 2020 Dear parents and guardians,... As with most things 2020, Parent/Teacher conferences will have to be adjusted because of COVID-19. For everyone’s safety, we will not be inviting parents and guardians into the school this year for parent-teacher interviews. We are saddened by this as staff enjoy meeting everyone and sharing what is going on in classes and at the school. Next week, you should expect to hear from teachers either in an email, newsletter, on FreshGrade, and/or via a phone call. This communication should give you a good understanding of what is going on in each class. If there are concerns from the teacher’s perspective, they will be contacting you directly on Wednesday October 7th or Thursday October 8th to discuss these issues. Early dismissal times are still in effect, so our daily schedule has been adjusted. We look forward to this opportunity to continue to connect with our parent community.
