Yesterday I ran 5K for the Nanaimo Community Hospice in memory of my Nanny we lost a few months ago. It was a special day for many reasons. Most obviously because I celebrated my Nanny, but also for my body. 6 months ago I could not walk halfway down the street to the mailbox. I spent the first five months post-partum going from the bed to the couch, and then very slowly walking around the neighbourhood. The beautiful thing about that is it was okay! It was okay to continue ...to rest my body, after resting her for 9 months during pregnancy. Last month I was able to go on my first run/walk - the first 'hard' exercise I have done in a year. In recovery I have learned to slow down and go inward. I have learned to move away from fear and control and turn towards trust and acceptance. I ask my body what she wants each day and I listen to her. The answers are there inside each and every one of us, and they always have been. We just need to listen.
