Some valued advice on finding what makes you happy in a workplace.

As the year ends people often take stock of what happened, what went well, what didn't, and what they want the new year to bring. It's a great exercise to do with your career. Dream, plan, then act.

How do you look at your failures vs successes? I failed an important exam for my US payroll course. At the time, my company was going through months of massive layoffs/restructuring. I was doing US payroll courses and Canadian payroll courses. I wasn't sleeping and was planning a vacation to Norway.... I'd hit the point that I told my roommates if I didn't pass, we're never coming back from Norway. After the test, the results showed that I had failed by 7 points. 7 little points. BUT, the test administrator said that 75% of people failed this exam. It was a tough test with manual calculations. The ones I'd failed were on a specific topic I hadn't had experience with and was struggling with prior to the course. And to be perfectly honest, it was the best thing ever. I walked out of that office and the weight that I'd been struggling under had lifted. I breathed deeply for the first time in weeks. I suddenly was smiling. Okay, so I failed. But I got through it. Baby steps, I passed my Canadian payroll course. I wasn't laid off and made some payroll magic happen going forward. And that trip to Norway was glorious. So, whatever failures you have, focus on what you learn from them. Celebrate the baby steps and work towards walking.

Be gentle with yourself. And who knows, you may be excelling more than you thought.
