The following letter is to the Finance Minister. Please share on to him your thoughts. He can be reached at [email protected] HONOURABLE ROBERT C MCLEOD MINISTER OF FINANCE Contract negotiations between the HRHSSA have stalled. This has not been a recent development but an on-going issue for almost 3 years. The employees are not in the dark as to why the negotiations have not been fruitful. We are fully aware that you, the Minister of Finance, has given our employer... no ability to bargain with us the employees. The only movement on the part of this government has been while under direct supervision by a federal conciliator. We find this behaviour on the part of our elected officials abhorrent and an affront to our legal right to collective bargaining as set out by Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This is not just an issue facing Hay River, as witnessed with the other bargaining units, including the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC). We, the employees of the HRHSSA stand with our bargaining team. We are frankly fed up with this government’s tactics and bullying. We are not asking for too much. We are asking for a deal that protects workers against harassment; a deal that ensures good jobs are kept in the North and not farmed out to locums; a deal that follows the Federal Government’s rules regarding compassion leave for dying or sick loved ones; a deal that protects employees against domestic violence (which has been a commitment made by your government and Minister Sebert https://www.gov.nt.ca//louis-sebert-preventing-and-reducin). We implore you to go back to the table. We believe that we can make a deal that helps the Northwest Territories and makes the HRHSSA an employer of choice.
