Today, November 20, marks the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a Black trans woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the trans people lost to violence since her death. We encourage all people, especially those that like HSHC, are in a position to provide important and appropriate care to our local trans co...mmunity, to reflect upon how we can better support, celebrate, and serve our trans and gender variant patients and clients. NSRAP will be hosting an in-person vigil to honour the memories of those lost to transphobic violence. There are several online vigils as well. We have posted the details of these in our Stories.

Today let’s chat about Black reproductive health outcomes! Unfortunately, like most of the topics we’ve covered in this series, those outcomes are poorer due to systemic forms of racism and oppression present in both healthcare and society at large. Swipe to see some quick facts on pregnancy-related deaths, Canadian stats, and reproductive concerns. Check out our Stories and our Linktree for some resources for both patients and health practitioners on combatting reproductive ...medical racism. P.S. This is the last planned topic from our series on race and sexual health, but we will definitely be looking for more in the future! If you have any suggestions, please send them along in our DMs or comments! #sexualhealth #halifaxsexualhealthcentre #sexedsaveslives #BlackLivesMatter #intesectionalsexed #intersectionalsexeducation #sexualhealthmatters #medicalracism #systemicracism #racisminhealthcare #reproductivehealth #Blackreproductivehealth

The Research Center of the Montreal Mental Health University Institute is recruiting for a study on the effect of minority stress on intimate partner violence and conflicts in female intimate relationships (ESMI). They are searching for women aged 18 and older, living in Canada, who lived in a violent relationship with a woman in the past, to participate to an online questionnaire. This study could help deepen understandings of the issues related to sexual minority women, a ...population still forgotten in the research field. If you are interested in participating, please see the attached flyer! The project has been approved by the Comité d’éthique de la recherche Société et culture of the University of Montreal (Number of certification: CERSC-2020-053-P). To help us, you will have to broadcast to your audience the recruitment poster attached below. The larger the diffusion, the better (on your website and/or your social media and/or electronic mailing list)! The survey launched on September 20th and should close on November 20th, once our goal of 200 participants is achieved. There will be weekly follow up, seeing as we may need to ask for your help again if we do not reach our objectives quickly enough. We will be able to send you a report of the results by the end of January and we could plan together the best way to transfer those results to your community, if you are interested.

Contraceptives/birth control are credited as being one of the most important developments in the world leading to the increased gender equality in the public sphere. This is true, but like in all of our topics over our series on race and sexual health, institutionalizedracism has still influenced birth control education, usage, and trends. From Margaret Sanger, Planned Parenthood, thoughts of genocide, and drug trials, let’s explore in our Stories how experiences of birth c...ontrol have not been equal for all folks seeking contraception. Photo is of members of the Parents Aid Society, an organization from Hempstead, Long Island demonstrating in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral against the issue byPope Paul VI on birth control in 1968. #sexualhealth #halifaxsexualhealthcentre #sexedsaveslives #BlackLivesMatter #intesectionalsexed #intersectionalsexeducation #sexualhealthmatters #medicalracism #systemicracism #racisminhealthcare #birthcontrol

The Couples & Sexual Health Lab at Dalhousie University have just launched two online studies that focus on new parents’ sexual and relationship well-being during the transition to parenthood. They are currently recruiting couples between 12-23 weeks pregnant with their first child to participate in the Hey, Baby! study. Additionally, they are recruiting couples less than 16 weeks postpartum for the Baby Makes 3! study. This is a very exciting time for many couples, but ...it also poses some unique challenges to the relationship. Their studies hope to identify ways to help people better navigate this transition. Check out the attached flyer for more information!

This is an invitation to Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, trans, non-binary and other people with fabulous diverse sexual and gender identities (LGBTQ...2+) across Canada who have an interest in the impacts of COVID-19 on our LGBTQ2+ communities. We seek Community Advisors to provide input on a national study on the unintended impacts on and prevalence of the COVID-19 pandemic among LGBTQ2+ people. Community Advisors will inform the online questionnaire and recruitment plan to reach 10,000 LGBTQ2+ people nationally. Online survey participants will have the option to receive a mailed-home kit to collect a few drops of blood that will be tested to see who got COVID-19. Our findings will inform future public health action to improve the health, well-being, and safety of LGBTQ2+ people. This includes mental and physical health, and experiences of discrimination and violence.

Non-Binary Experiences of Healthcare in Nova Scotia Call for participants - residents of Halifax and Kings County. In a binary world, have you experienced excl...usion at your medical professional’s office? Have you been misgendered or dead named constantly? Or have you had positive experiences with your medical team actively including you whether by validating your name choices or asking pronouns? Do you want to help others understand what is most useful in medical offices? I’m a non-binary graduate student at Acadia University trying to spread information about how exclusion and inclusion impact the health of non-binary individuals. Eligible participants are 18+, non-binary (defined for my thesis as neither exclusively or constantly identifying as male/masculine or female/feminine) and have accessed healthcare within Nova Scotia in the last three years.
