As we draw near the end of 2020, we would like to take this time to express our gratitude to YOU, our community of donors and volunteers, for making an impact on patient care each and every day whether it’s through a monetary donation or a gift of time YOU are making a difference. Today, we spotlight long-time volunteer, Lillian Wahamaa, who has made a difference to health care over a span of 35 years. Lillian began her years of volunteering after her retirement as a teac...her at 62 years old, first with the Sudbury Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in 1982, later serving as President, followed by years with the HSN Volunteer Association. A proud Life Member of Finlandia Village, Lillian volunteered during a time of hospital restructuring within the community; the first beating heart off-pump coronary bypass surgery took place in Canada at the Memorial in 1991; and when the Auxiliary instituted programs, such as a mobile library for patients, teenage volunteers and the gift shop which is still going strong today. Lillian is part of the Auxiliary’s legacy of helping to raise millions of dollars to support patient care in our community. I enjoyed my volunteer time immensely and was honoured to do this work, said Lillian. It was rewarding to be able to help people, contribute to the growth of the organization and make meaningful connections with so many people over the years. Lillian has many great memories during her volunteer years, especially during this time of the year when the annual Auxiliary Christmas Tea Party for hospital staff would take place. It was an opportunity for us to celebrate staff and all of our accomplishments together. We would even make up plates of food for those working the night shift, so that everyone felt appreciated for their hard work, said Lillian. THANK YOU Lillian for your gift of time over the years. We THANK all of our volunteers and donors for everything they do to make patient care better. Happy Holidays!
