Why is proper roof venting important? The purpose of venting a roof changes depending on the season or climate, but is equally as important all year round. In the winter, you want your attic to be cold so that it matches the temperature outside, thus preventing the snow on your roof from melting and re-freezing, causing ice damming and potential roof damage leading to leaks inside your house. Proper venting in cold weather will also help to vent any moisture that moves from t...he conditioned living space to the attic. In the summer, proper ventilation helps to expel solar-heated hot air to reduce your homes cooling load and relieve some strain on your air conditioning systems, thus keeping your house cooler with less energy used. How do I know if my roof needs better ventilation? They say you should never judge a book by its cover and the same can apply to your roof. Although it may look good on the outside, that doesnt necessarily mean its structurally sound. Welcome to winter, Ontario!! With the recent snowfall, let's talk about ICE DAMMING. Are you scratching your head right now? Have you heard that term before and know what it means? An ice dam is just like what it sounds like: a solid ridge of ice that forms at the edge of your roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off your roof. Think of a beaver dam and how it works... it holds back water and stops its natural flow. ... An ice dam does the same thing, but on your roof; The water backs up behind the dam, and just like a beaver dam, if the water can't flow along it's natural path, it will find another way. As a home-owner, this is very concerning as the alternate route may be through your home, causing damage to your walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas. How can you tell if there's ice damming on your roof? Check for icicles! Icicles can be beautiful and even nostalgic; we all remember breaking them off as kids right? So fun! But the conditions that cause icicles, are the same conditions that lead to ice damming, so check your house for icicles today! Pro tip from This Old House: To keep ahead of ice dam damage, snap photos where you see frosty buildup. Use the pictures to help target an interior inspection, during which you should check for leaks. You might be asking, "What causes ice damming?" and the answer is simple, improper ventilation or inadequate insulation, or both. Your attic stores heat from your home, making the roof surface above it warmer, but cold air from outside comes in through the soffit, so the snow melts off the top of your roof where its warmer, runs down toward the soffit where it's colder and freezes again causing an ice dam. So how do you fix it? You call the experts!
