Wishcycling happens when you toss something into the recycling bin without checking whether it’s actually recyclable, hoping you got it right. By doing so, you could actually contaminate items that can be recycled. When a batch of recyclables is contaminated, there is a good chance that the whole lot will be rejected and end up in the landfill.... Wishcycling is one of the biggest issues waste management faces today. So brush up on what goes in the recycling bin by reviewing the guidelines on your city's website so you can recycle with confidence

One of our students, Caroline Thibault, co-founder of @thenullaproject, recently completed our course and earned the official #ZeroWaste Canada (ZWC) certificate of completion. Together with her cousin Nancy Prevost-Maurice, Caroline launched the Nulla project in December 2019, a social-environmental enterprise with a vision to reduce single-use cups and takeout container waste from the landfill and the ocean while keeping the to-go culture alive. In the one year since the s...tart of their pilot project, they succeeded to reduce an estimated 9000 single-use cups! Read more on our blog! Link in Bio

We are happy to announce that the #ZeroWaste Fundamentals course continues to run successfully. This self-run course is designed for those who are looking for more information on Zero Waste and how to take it to the next level. It aims to provide individuals with a solid foundation of Zero Waste practices, policies, values, and concepts. This is what one of our students had to say:... This was an incredible course! It showed the systematic approach to Zero Waste instead of the Linear thinking that we have adapted to now. It was very detailed and provided lots of references and information to be able to carry forward on the Journey to Zero Waste. Extremely good content for the Amount Paid for the Course. Well worth it! ~ Tammy Barton Thank you for the 5 stars! You can also start building your career in Zero Waste today, while achieving a Zero Waste Canada official certificate! A question we often hear: Are milk cartons compostable? Nope, they are not!... However, they are recyclable! So don’t forget to collect them and throw them into your blue bin. #DYK That #Manitoba currently has a 75% carton recovery rate; which is the highest in #Canada! This includes juice cartons, milk cartons, & non-beverage cartons. Great job! As of January 2020, the national blended carton recycling-recovery rate was 58%. This is up from 26% in 2008. British Columbia carton recovery rate sits at 61%. We all have to work together to bring that percentage higher! Info: recyclecartons.ca

In 2016, 29,000 tonnes of plastic garbagethe equivalent of about 2.3 billion single-use plastic water bottles ended up as litter in Canadaon beaches, in parks, in lakesand even in the air. We need to move towards a just and #zerowaste future and stop relying on polluting fossil-fuel derived products that leave us firmly in the past. Luckily, here in #Canada, the end is near for plastic grocery bags, straws , cutlery, stir sticks, six-pack rings and takeout food contain...ers made from hard-to-recycle plastics. The national ban will come into effect next year #goodnews

Single-use plastics are one of the biggest contributors to waste. Consider using bamboo products as an eco-friendly alternative to common plastic products such as cups and toothbrushes. Not only is it strong and fast-growing, but it is cultivated without the use of pesticides and chemicals!

The Wasteberg Concept and Zero Waste . More than 2 decades ago people began to realize the impossibility of reaching a sustainable society by ONLY focussing on downstream recycling and waste diversion. . This realization created the foundations for the #ZeroWaste movement and its underlying no waste to landfill philosophies.... . It became clear that it was important to start with minimizing the upstream resource extraction to produce goods and demand an industry-wide redesign of manufacturing processes to achieve clean production. .
