Recently, HTFC worked with the Kenora District Services Board staff to update their 10-year housing and homelessness plan. The plan gives direction to strengthen a system of integrated services and supports along the full housing continuum: emergency shelters, transitional housing, supported living, affordable housing, and private market housing. It focuses on tailoring services and supports to community members’ needs and identifies key groups including: families, students, ...workers, seniors, youth aging out of care, individuals exiting incarceration and those dealing with addiction, fleeing family violence, or escaping human trafficking. Check out the report at KDSB’s website: http://kdsb.on.ca/Home/A%20Place%20for%20Everyone_FINAL.pdf

Awesome Indigenous-led caribou stewardship coming out of the Askiy Nanakacihtakewin Stewardship Program in York Factory First Nation and Collaboration for Atikok - a project of 8 First Nations working together to protect caribou. The communities have on-the-land monitors, respectful harvest messaging, and gatherings to share their knowledge and work together on Indigenous-led stewardship. Great to see these signs go up, and the good work continuing this year.

The Riverbend Community School outdoor learning environment was completed in the Fall of 2020, just in time for staff and students to enjoy this beautiful new space! The outdoor classroom and gathering place features a seating area complete with lodge pole structures, a centre hearth space for smudging, and Indigenous plantings that surround the space. The Courage Circle is oriented to the four cardinal directions and includes eight CorTen weathered steel panels featuring Ojibwe constellations of each season in the north circumpolar sky. The circle opens up to the street edge, welcoming the community in to enjoy the space as well.

Please consider donating what you can to help install what will be a beautiful permaculture garden and community meeting space at 545 Broadway. Elder Audrey Log...an has been teaching and sharing Indigenous agricultural practices for many years on this site and with her guidance we will be doing a significant refurbishment, transplanting the current garden from its less than ideal location (less than a foot of top soil over rubble) to the spacious front yard of this high profile heritage property. This Indigenous led garden will be a permanent, visible, celebrated feature of our community, at the corner of Broadway and Colony on Treaty One land. https://www.gofundme.com/f/west-broadway-indigenous-agricul See more

We want to thank you for celebrating our 50th birthday with us this past year. As we take the opportunity to reflect in this time of change, we are reminded that the core values and approaches that have guided our work over the past half-century will also carry us forward into the future: passion, adaptability, curiosity, collaboration, and love of place. It is an honour to play a part in connecting people and nature and shaping healthier, more inclusive, and resilient communities and environments, and we look forward to continuing this important work. So very grateful to be here for all of it. Heres to 50 more! #thisislandscapearchitecture #urbandesign #communityplanning #peopleplaces #50years #collaborativedesign

Did you know that working with the @brandonrivebankinc, @manitobahabitatheritage @ducksunlimitedbrandon and @seacomarine, HTFC has redeveloped the demonstration wetland at the Brandon Discovery Centre. Now open to all, the renewed nature education facility includes a large viewing platform with capacity for day camps, a 40 long gangway that will rise and fall with the changing water level of the marsh and a floating boardwalk section that brings you close to all the flora and fauna that call the wetland their home. #thisislandscapearchitecture #landscapearchitecture #biodiveristy #natureeducation #travelmanitoba photo from: eBrandon Buzz

We recognize that racism and systemic oppression has long been perpetuated in Canada and around the world. As planners and designers, we shape policies and public spaces that have a significant impact on peoples lives. We acknowledge the part we have to play in making the world and our professions safer and more welcoming for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color). We will be working to listen more, connect more, learn more, and act more as we follow the lead of Bla...ck, Indigenous, and other marginalized peoples. Happy Birthday, Manitoba! HTFC is proud to share your living and evolving story with all Manitobans through projects such as Upper Fort Garry Provincial Park. The Upper Fort Garry project focuses on the multicultural nature of Manitoba and on the key role that Indigenous and Métis people have had in the history and ongoing evolution of this province. Upper Fort Garry is open 365 days a year and features an interpretive wall that tells the story of Manitoba - complete with ...10,000 programmable LED lights! (If you decide to visit Upper Fort Garry, be sure to head to the App Store/Google Play and download the free interactive app!) #manitoba #manitobamade #winnipeg #ywg #exploremb @ Winnipeg, Manitoba

Earth Day, like HTFC, is celebrating its 50th birthday, which is the perfect moment for a shout-out to the important work and amazing staff of Green Action Centre! This non-profits social enterprise, Compost Winnipeg, recently announced it had diverted a total of over a million kg of organic waste, which offsets the equivalent of 3 million kilometres of car travel! From bike parking for schools to events like the Commuter Challenge, or supporting First Nations waste reduction efforts to municipal leaders debates; chances are if you live in Winnipeg your life has been touched by one of their initiatives. We love their optimism, their drive, and their focus on every day actions we all can do to help tackle our mounting environmental challenges. Happy Earth Day! #earthday #earthday2020

We are particularly proud of our partnership with the City Of Kenora. It all started with a community initiative to supplement its economy transitioning from a resource base economy to one that includes a robust tourism component. Community leadership and a thoughtful master plan lead to years of development and transformation. The community consistently championed these projects as truly Made in Kenora inventions to re-engage with the lake, enhance walkability and ma...ke being in Kenora fun and eventful. From the initially reviled roundabout that turned people around (at first sometimes the wrong way) to the new Whitecap Pavilion and most recently incorporating Indigenous languages to signage. Today we continue to evolve and implement these plans and are astounded with the ongoing excitement and tenacious spirit to reach for even higher and loftier goals for their community. Whats next Kenora?! We are excited to find out and to be a part of it. Thank you to Kim Pirie-Milko for the first image in this carousel! #HTFC50

The world might feel a bit heavy right now.. but we can all rejoice in the fact that it is officially SPRING! Happy equinox, everyone! Oodena Celebration Circle at The Forks is our favourite place to be when the seasons change - if you're curious about Oodena, check out this link (or head outside and practice social distancing while breathing in the fresh spring air!) We want to reach out and assure you that we are monitoring the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation closely and are working to ensure we meet the needs of our clients as well as provide for the health and safety of our community. At this time, HTFC Planning & Design remains open. We are following the recommendations outlined by Manitoba Health. These steps include immediately moving many employees to work from home while we remain open with a smaller employee contingent. As... a company we are minimizing our participation in gatherings, which extends to external in-person meetings. We are investing in equipment and support to ensure we can continue to communicate through virtual teleconferencing. Travel both in and out of the Province is suspended indefinitely. You can still reach us by phone at (204) 944-9907 where your call will be re-directed to individual staff members who are not presently in the office. You can also reach all HTFC staff by email as always. Please stay safe and take care of one another

Experiencing the stunning landscape and culture in and around Sanikiluaq, Nunavut first-hand while mapping field observations and community land use... what more could a landscape architect ask for?! Being part of the Kinngaaluk Territorial Park Master Plan was nothing short of incredible. Facilitated by NVision Insight Group, the process allowed for the community to lead the way and define for themselves the idea of park. Ultimately, an area of land near the community was designated as a protected space to respect and support Inuit sustainable harvesting practices. The project won the CSLA National Award of Excellence in 2018 and was a cover story in Landscape Architecture Magazine last year #HTFC50

Its no stretch to say that active transportation is one of the most potent forces for change in our cities today. HTFC was an early voice advocating for better bicycle and pedestrian facilities in Manitobas capital region, co-authoring Winnipegs first studies on bicycle facilities, and working with the fledgling Winnipeg Trails to help establish a branding system and user code. Since then we have completed more than 30 projects with an AT focus from Fort Frances to Halifax, and we remain a strong and dedicated proponent for people-powered transportation options in all our projects. #HTFC50

Over 250 years ago, King George III granted 235 acres of pastureland in the heart of Halifax to its inhabitants in perpetuity, making the Halifax Common Canadas oldest public greenspace. The Common has continuously evolved since then, with each generations priorities and lifestyles leaving traces in the landscape. HTFC has partnered with Halifax firm Upland Planning + Design to create a broad-ranging revitalization strategy for the Common that embraces its remarkable heritage while meeting the needs the citys diverse and growing population today and tomorrow. #HTFC50

HTFC has been helping to design and plan The Forks for over thirty years, starting with the 1978 Red River Corridor Master Plan, which promoted a vision of the declining rail yard as a four-season recreational destination (including artistic warming huts along riverside ski trails)! Garry Hilderman worked for years with Etienne Gaboury on the design advisory committee refining long-term development plans for The Forks, with the firm leading or supporting in the creation of memorable places in every corner of the site, from Esplanade Riel to the Forks Market, Oodena to the forthcoming Railside Development. #HTFC50

In 2002, HTFC was part of a CIDA-funded project to plan a new highway corridor in Brazil connecting Recife on the coast to the inland community of Vitoria. Garry Hilderman traveled to Brazil and worked with local planners to identify opportunities for this new road connection that would stimulate tourism and improvements to the quality of life for its citizens. Plans included the areas first multimodal streetscapes, massive shade structures and a regional market square! #HTFC50

Feeling down in the dumps on Blue Monday? What better to talk about than dumps! Landfills are the second-largest source of greenhouse gases in Manitoba. Multiple levels of government are carefully monitoring the problem, and recognize that a careful approach is needed to reduce impacts and gain community value out of these large-scale landscapes. Since the 1980s, HTFC has been involved in the planning and re-development of landfills such as the after-use plans for Brady Road and Summit Road sites, and recently completing master plans for Kilcona Park and Dakota Community Centre. #HTFC50

We are so excited to announce that HTFC is expanding our business westward into the land of living skies! We welcome Marilyn Gould, SALA, CSLA to our team as our new Regional Manager in Saskatoon. In 1999, HTFC led a collaborative process with Downtown Winnipeg Partners to imagine the evolution of downtown Winnipeg over the next quarter century. The result was CentrePlan: a complete streets, multimodal transportation, infill development, and greenspace development guideline for Winnipegs core neighbourhoods. The relationships developed during CentrePlanning led to the establishment of the CentreVenture Development Corporation. Twenty years later, CentrePlan has been updated several times and still serves as a tool for the City of Winnipeg Municipal Government, The Forks and Centre Venture as they lead urban renewal in downtown Winnipeg. Many of the strategies presented in the plan have been implemented and now contribute to a more vibrant and inclusive urban hub! #HTFC50

We love working in remote places like Arviat (61.1078 N, 94.0624 W) on the western edge of Hudson Bay. Our 2014 collaboration with Accutech Engineering on the Arviat EcoPark celebrates the tundra ecosystem, northern lights and local traditions with a floating boardwalk trail system. The project uses reclaimed shipping containers and wood palettes, crushed local rock and salvaged steel to reduce project costs and give new life to local waste materials that are hard to recycle! #HTFC50 #ecotourism #Arviat #northernadventures #tundra #northernlights

Did you know HTFC served on the National Capital Commission Design Board and designed the National Archives Building Grounds in Gatineau Quebec during the 80s and 90s? Garry Hilderman set the massive building on an expansive elliptical mound patterned with bold swaths of native and adaptive plantings echoing the wetland, woodland and meadow environments around the Ottawa River and embracing urban ecology well before it was a buzzword. Never without a bit of fun and whimsy, the HTFC team notched the mound to allow the parking lot to serve as a drive-in theatre for outdoor screenings of archived films!
