Huble Homestead Historic Site 11.05.2021

Our collection is full of items used by people in the past - most of them are very similar to things we still have today, but every once in a while we stumble across something that gives us pause. This item, normally on display in the General Store, is one of them! Do you know what this is? Any guesses? (Don't worry - we'll reveal the answer later on today!)

Pictured here in this #ThrowbackThursday are sisters Bertha Huble (on the left) and Martha Huble sharing a rocking chair. If you take a close look at the background of this family photograph, which was taken circa 1914, you can also see that it was taken outside the Huble House and the summer kitchen!

John Robert Giscome, as seen here in an artist's rendition by Richard Estell, was a Jamaican miner who arrived in Canada between 1858-59 as part of a large migration of Black settlers from California. Giscome would eventually make his way into northern British Columbia - in 1862, he and Bahamian Henry McDame decided to head even further north to prospect for gold in the Peace River region. The two would find their first foray into the Peace to be unsuccessful in terms of striking it rich, but by 1870 they would be among the first to prospect Germansen Creek during the Omineca Gold Rush. They would go on to strike gold in 1874, kicking off the beginning of the Cassiar Gold Rush, and marking their place in British Columbia's history.

It's a Pro-D Day in Prince George today, and our friends at The Exploration Place have two virtual events planned! Keep the kiddos (and adults) entertained by meeting some of their critters in the morning or by taking part in a free online workshop in the afternoon. Register for one, or both, of these free events at facebook.com/TheExplorationPlace/events!

We've lost count of how many times we've said 2020 is an unprecedented year, but that doesn't make it any less true! We're so thankful for all the support we have received this year from our visitors, volunteers, and partners. In response to COVID-19, this year's Remembrance Day ceremony in Prince George will be a live virtual event. Tomorrow morning you can watch the ceremony online through the Legion 43 PG Facebook page, or on YouTube (https://bit.ly/3lkZzPo). The Legion is also encouraging people to observe the two minutes of silence at 11:00 AM by standing at the end of their driveway, or by going out on their balcony. Lest we forget.

Now that Huble Homestead is closed for the winter months, our staff has begun working on some of the tasks we set aside for the off-season. One of things we have focused our efforts on is digitizing sections of the original Huble dairies we received from the family earlier this year. Here's a snippet of what Albert Huble was up to at the beginning of November in 1917, written in his own hand.

It's a #ThrowbackThursday to 1918, when the Prince George Citizen printed this helpful piece on October 18. At this point, the city had twenty two cases of the influenza reported to health authorities. Even though this advice is now over a hundred years old, much of it is still relevant today, especially as we get into the colder winter months. To quote the last piece of advice - 'take care of yourself'!

Looking down at the site from the top of the hill on a beautiful, frosty morning. If you look closely, you can see the Fraser River in the background.
