We may have a wee staff, but we're doing our best to support our local restaurants right now. Today's lunch: tasty, tasty Indian food from The Spice Hut. So yum!
Meet the Bookmongers: TREVOR (as part of our local CANADIAN INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE DAY) We have asked him the following questions: 1. Favourite Breakfast Food: Peppers, onions, snausage, potatoes, garlic, eggs, all mixed and scrambled... 2. Currently on the nightstand (or floor, or chair, or wherever you keep your current read(s)) Europe Central by the master (William T. Vollman) https://bit.ly/3sdh4Ur 3. Best Cranbrook hangout Southview bike trails (aka Jack's trails) #CIBD2021 #Hucklberrybooks #BCBookmongers #cranbrook #breakfastscramble #spicyisnicey

How do you do a book launch these days? It's easier than you'd think! Signed bookplates mailed to stores, and access to online events. Like this one, happening next Tuesday, October 20th: purchase a signed copy of "Daughter of Black Lake" and get exclusive access to the virtual book launch. See details (and reserve your copy of the book) here: www.huckleberrybooks.ca/?q=p.events While seating for a virtual event is unlimited, in-store stock of the book is. Order yours now!
I have a sudden urge to play "The Floor Is Lava" to add a little excitement. Anyone?
Closing night...always a surprise how quickly it arrives! But it means you have one more chance to watch this delightful production. Live stream tix available online, at www.cranbrookcommunitytheatre.com.
Instead of being offended by the weather (SNOW! WHAT THE HECK!) we're focusing on the fact that this is a perfect day to hang out in the bookstore and unpack some new puzzles, like this bright little bit of the tropics. Visit our webstore to see what we have in stock for puzzles: https://bit.ly/33WDlg4
Another reason to be thankful today!
Our fall events are going to look a little different this year. Fortunately, we're getting a bit of help from publishers and festivals. The first in a great lineup is later this month. Purchase a copy of "Daughter of Black Lake" for exclusive access to the virtual launch: https://bit.ly/3n9uEGV (Please make sure we have your email address, to send you your ticket.)
Three more chances to see this quirky little play. Tickets for the livestream available online at www.cranbrookcommunitytheatre.com.
While this has certainly been a challenging year, we Huckleberries still have plenty to be thankful for. (In large part, because of YOU!) We wish you each a tasty & toasty Thanksgiving. Thanks for being part of our community!
Yesterday was a perfect fall day for a road trip to Kimberley. And now we're all re-stocked with fresh (gorgeous!) new earrings from Tumbled Earth. Come see for yourself!
Brown paper packages, tied up with string...this is #1 of six monthly parcels going out to a young reader - a birthday gift that will keep on giving! We can work with you to customize gifts & care packages for birthdays, holidays, or just because. Contact us for details.
Did you know that the last residential school in Canada closed as recently as 1996? Here, the St Eugene school closed in 1970. This isn't ancient history, relegated to dates in a book. Today, we honour the thousands of children forced into residential schools.
Darn it, Neil! I didn't need to add anything else to my reading pile! (Interestingly, I just re-read the Narnia series a month or two ago. Still full of magic. To paraphrase C.S. Lewis: I'm glad never got too old to read fairy tales again!) Tell me about an influential book (or three) in your reading life.
'Tis the season to start clothing your toes. (Unless you're stubborn like me and refuse....in which case, it's a very good thing that we have more socks in stock, for those mornings when the toes are froze.)
Need help organizing your existence? Or just a good laugh? We can help you get your Strange Planet fix.
Thoughts on writing, from a favourite author.
We know this is early, but: Gift-giving season is coming. . We need your help. The pandemic has caused significant slowdowns in the supply chain and we know that wait times will only increase over the next few weeks. We have done our best to select new releases and order larger quantities but we aren't omniscient and inevitably there will be a title we didn't predict. . YOU CAN HELP US. We need to know what books you plan on giving for the holidays - tell us in the comments b...elow! You can also help by pre-ordering your books, via our website (www.huckleberrybooks.ca) or by email. . This retail season is going to be different than any other and the more we can work together to find your books early the more likely we will get your books in time! Watch this space for updates on how we're working to make the upcoming season easier (and hopefully, a little more fun!) for you.
Opening night! This quirky, whimsical play is the magic we need right now. Tickets for the theatre and for the live stream available online at www.cranbrookcommunitytheatre.com
We've posted the gorgeous "Lost Words" book before. Now we have the puzzle to go with it.
You'll find this Giller short-lister with Trevor's staff picks, and on our website here: https://bit.ly/36w7IvL
Of the five excellent titles short-listed for this year's Giller Prize, "The Glass Hotel" is Erin & Vicky's favourite. https://bit.ly/3cZ6wCl
Almost, Maine was written by John Cariani in 2004 for four actors. But, with its 19 various roles and interesting story line it quickly became the inspiration f...or Bob and Michelle McCue to stage this production during Covid-19. To get as many people active but in a safe way. Almost, Maine will have a barebones crew of only one tech member per show. The rest will be all hands on deck for the performers. Speaking of, how do you have 19 and social distance? Well, there are 4 dressing and 3 staging areas where the actors dress and then wait for their scenes. Once they have finished their scene, they change and leave the building. Those who are later in the production show up closer to their turn on the stage. So, yes, there are 19 in the cast of Almost, Maine, but with mostly 2 and a max of 3 on the stage at any one time and no curtain call some of these performers may never once see their fellow cast mates. It is a bit of irony that this is one of, if not the largest cast of any CCT production to be at the Stage Door and yet, they haven’t even seen their costars. Get your tickets for CCT Presents Almost Maine at www.cranbrookcommunitytheatre.com We want to say thank you to Victoria Avenue Dental for sponsoring this show.
How to vote during a pandemic: just do it. But if you're looking to keep your social distance, the mail-in request takes about 3 minutes to complete. The longest part of the application was digging out my ID.
Enjoy this little ditty in honour of Bilbo & Frodo Baggins' birthday.
The lastest (delightful!) CCT production opens this week - and you can choose to watch from the comfort of your own couch! Tickets for both in-person and live-stream options available exclusively throught the CCT website: https://www.cranbrookcommunitytheatre.com/
