Today, September 30th, 2020, is Orange Shirt Day. Today our team is wearing orange to commemorate and to honour the victims and the survivors of the residentia...l schools. Residential schools were church-run schools where approximately 150,000 Métis, Inuit and First Nations children were sent between the 1860s and the 1990s. Did you know that the last residential school in Canada closed in 1996? The goal of these schools was to assimilate indigenous children into "a civil Canadian society. These schools ripped hundreds of thousands of indigenous families apart and severed ancestral ties that, for many, were never reconnected. They created a disconnect between the people, their traditions, and their cultures - which lead to the intergenerational trauma that affects so many people today. To the survivors of residential schools: We see you, we hear you, and you have our support. To the thousands of children who did not survive these schools, you are loved, and you will not be forgotten.
