[improvise] As an S-LP, I improvise. A lot. Services are tailored to my clients and their specific interests and abilities. As my clients could probably tell you, I always start with a plan. But once we get going, we may or may not stick to that plan - and that's okay! We want to target our communication goals in fun and meaningful ways, and that could look different every time. Today was Holiday Sweater Day at school. No holiday sweater? No problem. Improvisation at its finest.

An UPDATE on Monday's UPDATE. :) Masks will be required by everyone entering the office, unless the person is under the age of two. If clients are able to work on their specific communication goals while wearing a mask, they will be asked to do so. If clients cannot reasonably work on their communication goals with a mask on, they will be permitted to take it off for the duration of the service only. Thank you to everyone for your understanding during this unprecedented time.... Please consider accessing services virtually, if that works for your family. This information was taken directly from the Government of SK website. Please visit https://www.saskatchewan.ca//indoor-mandatory-masking-requ for more information.

THANK YOU to all my wonderful clients for your support! Since re-opening the office space in July, you have all done your part to curb the spread of COVID-19 by abiding by the protocols laid out in our Pandemic Plan. As of today, there are a few new rules of which to be mindful. Many of you are already taking these precautions, so I thank you! Please contact me if you would like an updated copy of the Pandemic Plan, or if you have any questions about these new protocols. Let's all stay safe and do our part.

The power of giving a choice never fails to amaze me, even something seemingly trivial can make a difference and works most of the time with my own daughter. This is a lovely visual about offering them

practice, practice, practice. When your kiddo has finally calmed down a bit, it’s time to try out a strategy to get their lid securely in pla...ce. HOWEVER, this is not the time to be trying out something you’ve never done before. The key to getting your kiddo to participate in the breathing or mindfulness activity is practice. It must be known to them - really well. Remember, they aren’t using their full brain right now (part of it is still in fight, flight, or freeze). For the strategy to work, we have to practice it often (daily) - when they are CALM. Only then will they be able to recall it in a moment of crisis. So pick a couple and practice, practice, practice. #connecttherapy #occupationaltherapyforkids #yqrtherapy #kidsthesedays #emotionalregulation #tameatantrum See more

These are tough, tough times we are living in. It’s hard to know how to explain what is happening in the world to little ones, especially when we can’t truly understand it ourselves. We can always keep listening, keep learning, and keep growing.

Most parents don't come into the speech clinic knowing about Apraxia. But they do often know that there is something that is holding their child back from being... able to communicate with their loved ones. Today, let's learn about the common signs and symptoms we see in children with Apraxia of speech. Check it out! > 1) Children with Apraxia are often very quiet babies. They often don't babble or try different sounds as much as you might expect. 2) A child with Apraxia might use "pop out" words. For example, your child might suddenly say "Hi Grandma!", but then be unable to say it again when you ask them to repeat it. This is NOT a sign of being lazy; this might be a sign of Apraxia. 3) Apraxia can make it really difficult for kids to learn new speech sounds. A child with apraxia might only use a couple of speech sounds at a time. Some kids with Apraxia use a "default" sound when they want to talk, like "ma ma ma ma!". 4) Speech errors made by kids with Apraxia can be inconsistent. They might make errors with the beginning sound of a word, followed by the wrong vowel, followed by the correct sounds, but then followed by missing an entire syllable! These challenges are can very frustrating for children with Apraxia. > Do any of these signs and symptoms sound like your child with a speech delay? Feel free to contact us! We have a number of clinicians who work with children with Apraxia of speech, and we're happy to answer any questions you may have. Tomorrow, we're going to talk a bit more about SLPs assess and diagnose Apraxia of speech. > #betterspeechandhearingmonth #apraxiaofspeech #apraxiaawareness See more

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the most commonly diagnosed neurological disorder in children. Adults with ASD have some of the poorest employment outcomes in... comparison to others with disabilities. Many adults with ASD earn less than minimum wage, endure periods of joblessness and frequently shuffle between positions, further diminishing their prospects. Improving employment outcomes benefits all of us. For individuals living with ASD, it enhances quality of life, economic independence, and social inclusion. Fortunately, there are many emerging practices and approaches that demonstrate success. Sadly, many do not occur. To learn more, join us for an informative and interactive 3-hour webinar where we review: What we know about employment outcomes for adults with ASD; 8 Predictors for Post-School Success; and, Practical Approaches, Resources, and Strategies for Enhancing Employment Success. Target Audience Adults living with ASD, parents and caregivers (please note that there are key strategies you can implement from an early age), educators, therapists, employment specialists and support staff. Investment: $40.00 per person. To register, click on: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/i-got-the-job-supporting-employ At the time of registration, you will receive your ticket and receipt of payment. Parents! We will be uploading Mr. Dustin's Craft Time video later this afternoon - this will NOT be a Live recording (but it will certainly seem like it is to y...our kids!). We will post the video to our IGTV/Facebook account by 3PM today! . . If possible, you can get a few materials handy for your kids before Craft Time begins. Again, we do NOT want anyone having to go to the store for supplies right now; please use what you have at home! If you don't have paint in the house, we found this super easy video on how you can make your own! Click this link to watch >> https://youtu.be/iwacEM9OAIU . . Now... at Pathways, we fully encourage kids to get MESSY while exploring art. But... we also have those handy preschool-style paint smocks to keep shirts clean. If it would keep you happier moms and dads, lay out some scrap paper or a tray under your child's art and consider a shirt that could stand get a bit of paint on it. Consider yourselves warned! (It reeeeally isn't that bad, we promise!) . . #preschool #art #yqr #yqrkids #socialdistancing #mrdustinrocks #easycrafts #DIYkids See more
