In this episode Gil Garratt, Artistic Director of the Blyth Festival, speaks with Tom Melady about the annual Blyth Threshers Reunion. Tom is a perennial music...al emcee at Shed 3 for the annual show and is emcee and founder of the Tuesday Tunes, a weekly music and social gathering held in Seaforth during the cold winter months. Huron Pioneer Thresher & Hobby Association Show On the second weekend of September for almost 60 years the Huron Pioneer Thresher & Hobby Association has hosted the annual Threshers Reunion and Steam Show in Blyth. Thousands of campers spend the week onsite at the Blyth Campgrounds leading up to the three-day weekend show that includes antique farm equipment and tractors, threshing demonstrations, working displays, tractor pulls and special events. A big part of the annual reunion is traditional music. Throughout the week and especially during the reunion weekend there's a full slate of performances, jam sessions, fiddle competition, and social dances that celebrate and keep the rural musical traditions of our area alive and flourishing. This year's show has been cancelled due to public health concerns but the Huron Pioneer Thresher & Hobby Association Show will return for its 60th Reunion in September 2021. https://blythsteamshow.com Join us next week for the final episode and screening of the entire film: August 23, Watch the full film with introduction by the film's Director Tom Tennisco and Producers Randall Lobb and Rick Sickinger

In this episode we focus on the Barn Dance Live. Gil Garratt, Blyth Festival Artistic Director, introduces the segment through an interview with longtime M/C fo...r the Barn Dance Live, Jim Swan. About the Barn Dance: On a Saturday night in 1937, one of CKNX's announcers in Wingham ran a program of recorded country music that he called the "CKNX Barn Dance". Doc Cruickshank , the station owner liked what he heard and decided to turn it into a regular program utilizing live music. Crowds soon gathered on the street to watch the Saturday Night CKNX Barn Dance through the front window of the studio. When it became apparent that the show was popular both at home and with the radio audience, Doc decided to take the show on the road. By utilizing long distance telephone lines, he was able to transmit the Barn Dance back to the studio and from there onto the air waves. By 1950 the program was a hit throughout all of Southwestern Ontario and had become known internationally as Canada's Largest Travelling Barn Dance. The Barn Dance remained on the air for over 25 years and is recognized in the Canadian Encyclopedia of Music (University of Toronto) as the longest lived radio show of its kind in the history of Canadian Broadcasting. The Barn Dance Live continues to this day. Artists from the past and talented newcomers are featured at the live shows that travel throughout Southwestern Ontario. Watch for one near where you live. Shot over the summer of 2015, Deep Roots:the Music of Huron County showcases the musical traditions of this rural community, and through interviews with master musicians and performance footage from Blyth Steam Threshers Show, Goderich Celtic Roots Festival, Tuesday Tunes, The Barn Dance Live and Brussels Fiddle Jamboree, captures the spirit of the community. Other episodes will stream as follows: August 16, Threshers episode introduced by Gil Garratt and Tom Melady August 23, Watch the full film with introduction by the film's Director Tom Tennisco and Producers Randall Lobb and Rick Sickinger
