Although we have just announced the upcoming 2020 World Tour Paddling Film Festival for April 9, we have unfortunately now decided to postpone the event. In light of the uncertainty of the next few weeks and the strong suggestions of social distancing to prevent spread of COVID-19 we had to make the hard decision to cancel, for now. Please contact MCC if you have already purchased a ticket. Our apologies and thank you for understanding.

I've detected hundreds of Wood Thrushes (Hylocichla mustelina) on my transects in Simcoe County in the past month, and thought I'd come across a nest or two - b...ut only encountered fledged young of various ages. The other day in Norfolk County I found two Wood Thrush nests in a couple of hours, right beside a trail. The summer doldrums have definitely set in, but they do not last long here.

I found a very special nest this morning in Simcoe county while surveying for the Huronia Land Conservancy. It belongs to a pair of Canada Warblers (Cardellina ...canadensis), experts at hiding their nest in very dense cover and concealing it with little bits of moss, making them extremely difficult to find. It’s probably the most exciting nest I’ve ever found! Canada Warblers are a species at risk and are declining across their range. They are one of the longest-distance migrant warblers, some breeding as far north and west as the Peace River Valley in British Columbia, and wintering in northwestern South America as far south as northern Bolivia. Only a couple of weeks from now, they will begin their journey southwards. I’ve seen them wintering in eastern Ecuador and watched them pass through Costa Rica on their way north. It was amazing to see a nest.
