Huron Midwives is looking forward to having Brynn Draper join us starting tomorrow, as a second year student from Laurentian University's Midwifery Education Program. She will be primarily working with Rebecca Boekee, RM but other Midwives' clients may get the chance to meet her around the office or at births as well. Welcome Brynn! "Hello! My name is Brynn Draper. I am a second year midwifery student from Laurentian University. I am originally from a rural farming commun...ity just north of Barrie. I will be your midwifery student January-May 2021. Before I was accepted into Midwifery I mainly studied Women's Studies and Spanish. I have been wanting to be a midwife since I was 13 when I first started watching birth videos and hearing birth stories. When I am not studying for Midwifery you can find me hiking, sewing, or reading a good book. I am very excited to meet you and I want to thank you for welcoming me as a member of the Huron Midwives team" See more

It was the middle of the night, and the midwife quietly walked into her house with all of her equipment in tow. She quietly walked up the stairs to see a hard w...orking mama preparing to birth her baby. In a pandemic, it is hard to decide where to have your baby. The hospital? At home? She unpacks her things, sets up all of the equipment needed for any major emergencies that might happen. All the while, the mother is busy doing the hard work. Moving from front-to-back, side-to-side. She is working with her body, trying to figure out how best to bring this baby home. The midwife remains quiet, preserving the space, trying to facilitate and not interrupt this important process. A long time ago, midwives weren't even able to give clients their IV antibiotics at home, we needed to consult with physicians. Now, we can provide exceptional care anywhere. On this specific night, the midwife helped this woman bring her baby earth side, with full personal protective equipment on. She cleaned her foggy glasses, and stood high on the bed as a makeshift IV pole, so this mother could get her antibiotics and some hydration after her long day of contractions. Let us not forget that midwives too are apart of this pandemic, and we are out there on the front lines willing as ever to make each birth as important as the last. We are working the same hours, 24 hours at a time, starting IV's, measuring pregnant bellies, counselling clients on what to do, guiding nervous and excited partners on their journey as well as helping big brothers and sisters hold their "new baby". Congratulations to this mama and her family on the safe arrival of their beautiful baby boy on this cold and wintery night. Share this if you love a midwife! (Photo shared with permission)

My dear clients, I'm on the road East, headed to fulfill my dream of practicing Midwifery in my home province. I'm so excited but also sad to leave Goderich and Huron County. Thank you to everyone one of you who invited me into your homes and to your births. I treasure every one. Take care of those babies for me! Happy Thanksgiving from Huron Midwives! We have a lot to be thankful for, even though we can't celebrate the way we'd like to. Reach out to a loved one or a neighbor, an elder or someone living alone; a phone call or some leftovers can go a long way to show you care while still keeping a safe distance. We would also like to acknowledge we are on the traditional territory of the Haudensaunee (Iroquois), Ojibway/Chippewa and Anishnabek people.

We have had the privilege of working with Melissa Murchison, Registered Midwife, since mid-May and are so happy to have her on our team going forward! Here is her bio for those who haven’t had the chance to meet her yet! I am so excited to be joining the Huron Midwives team! As a child in a military family I have had the privilege of living all over our beautiful country. I spent most of my childhood on Vancouver Island in British Columbia and have been in Ontario ever since ...starting High School. I have a bachelor’s degree in science from the University of Waterloo and started a master’s degree in molecular biology there as well. It was during my time in graduate school that I found and started to fall in love with midwifery. The more I learned, the more I realized midwifery was the profession I had been looking for. So, I left graduate school and started the Midwifery Education Program at McMaster University. Learning the art and science of midwifery has been one of the most fulfilling and challenging experiences, and I am thrilled to be able to put my learning into practice. I am passionate about supporting families through pregnancy, birth and the postpartum. And I am looking forward to caring for the families of Huron county. When I am not working I can most likely be found at home with my cat, a big cup of tea and my latest knitting project . See more
