Leadership blog post. I hope you enjoy. Not an easy one to write but definitely from my heart There are many days when I think about my journey in real esta...te and I am so filled with gratitude because I can truly say that although everyday isn’t perfect, I genuinely love what I do. Even through the difficult days when I am dealing with problems or complaints, I still am content and I love my work. However, being effective in my leadership role did not look like I thought. When I sold real estate, I aspired to own the brokerage. In fact, I was so convinced, I wrote in my journal I will own ReMax Realty Professionals and today I do. I viewed owning the brokerage as the next step in my process and as the next level in my ladder of success. However, I have come to realize that brokerage ownership has not been a higher level of success, but rather, a higher level of responsibility and a true test of humility. Leading is serving. Ownership is accountability to others whom I was not accountable to in the past. When you are the person at the front, often you get the least recognition. Therefore, if I sought out leadership to puff myself up, I would have been tremendously disappointed. Selling real estate is very much about promoting yourself and operating within your own space. The financial benefits are much greater and the recognition is much higher, therefore, success (or how most people view success) was not achieved by moving into this role. In fact, the transition of taking over this role was very intimidating to me initially. I doubted my ability to do it well. However, through mistakes and a true understanding of my role is shaping me into a leader. The most important lesson I have learned is to die to my own personal feelings of importance, to die to the need to be recognized and to focus on valuing the people around me, to see past their weaknesses and to recognize their strengths. This is what is required to lead effectively. I possess the vision but without a team of people that trust in your leadership (on some level), you are dead in the water. I think that the leaders around us who carry high levels of responsibility to others, receive the least glory. Therefore, if recognition makes you tick, the boss may not be the job for you. To lead, you need humility and to fight for your own way in every situation will only lead to disrespect and conflict. These are the characteristics I am trying to let go of. Leading by feeling you are the most important person in your organization is a sure recipe for a sinking ship. Build up those around you and see past your own nose. That’s what leadership is all about. Many days I get it wrong but I am trying my best to get it right. I try to be intentional in appreciating those who link arms with me for the vision. To accept that everyone is diverse and talented in their own way and to help others grow bigger and greater than me is the true mark I have done my job well. If you are a leader and visionary be encouraged by the success around you, that means you are doing well
