Coronavirus -March 24th- Policy The Ontario government, the College of Veterinarians of Ontario and the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association have requested we stop all non-essential procedures and appointments. We have been given the trust to decide this for ourselves. At least for the moment. This is an enormous responsibility and one that we take quite seriously. There are a tremendous number of grey zones and trying to figure out what is essential and what is not is a di...Continue reading

COVID-19 As a veterinary clinic we encounter large numbers of people every day. With that in mind, for the health and safety of our clients and staff we have implemented the following precautions: -Our front door is locked. If you are here to pick up food or medication please call the office, we will process your payment with credit card over the phone. We will not be accepting cash or debit at this time so please plan accordingly. We will meet you at the door of the clinic t...o give you your product. - If you have a regularly scheduled appointment, please wait in your car and call the office to let us know you have arrived and where you are located. Please park close to the clinic. Make sure your pet is in a carrier and/or has a good leash on them. We will ask that you bring your pet to the door, where we will meet you. You will be asked to return to your car and we will call your cell phone while we examine and take care of your pet. -If you have been out of the country, please refrain from booking appointments until your 14 day quarantine period is over. -If you have an emergency or a sick pet and you are in quarantine please book an appointment and have a friend or family member bring your pet to the appointment. -If you are feeling unwell-please do not book an appointment with your pet until you are feeling better, or as above, have a trusted friend or family member bring your pet to the appointment. -Our pet food supply has been sporadic and limited the past several days, therefore we are limiting the amount of food that can be purchased-please be understanding of this as we want to ensure that everyone is able to get some food for their pets. Please allow 3 to 5 business days for food and medication orders to arrive. -At this time we are remaining open with our regular hours, however depending on orders from our federal, provincial and local governments this could change-we will keep you informed! As our hospital is a public space where people and pets co-mingle, I am writing to keep you informed of our recommendations as well as the steps we are taking to continue offering the care your pets need, while providing you and our staff a safe environment. As always, we rigorously follow infection prevention, control and associate hygiene best practices in our hospitals. We have increased both the frequency and scope of hospital cleaning and disinfecting to help ensure bot...h clients and staff are kept safe. We work closely with our teams to ensure that anyone who is not feeling well understands that we support them staying home. Currently, there is no indication that dogs or cats will become clinically infected with COVID-19, so your family pets are safe. What we don’t know yet is whether they can possibly become carriers of the virus from person to person. To help us continue to serve pets in need, we ask that clients who have recently traveled to a high-risk country, had any exposure to symptomatic or confirmed positive cases, confirmed positive themselves or have respiratory illness not bring their pets into our hospitals. If your pet is having a medical emergency or requires urgent care, please call ahead and inform our staff that you are at-risk or positive for COVID-19. We will determine the best method to ensure that your pet can receive the care they need while minimizing the risk to our staff and other clients. We may be able to receive your pet through a family member or friend who has not been exposed to you, or receive your pet directly from a vehicle, but this decision needs to be in consultation with our hospital team. While in the hospital, please maintain at a distance of between 3 and 6 feet of space between you and other people and pets. Limiting the number of people who accompany each pet to the hospital, and minimizing the time spent in the waiting area is also good practice and is recommended. After checking in at the reception, you are welcome to wait in your car. We will alert you when we are ready to see your pet. We encourage everyone to follow the Public Health Agency of Canada , the World Health Organization , and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association for the most up-to-date and accurate information about COVID-19.

Recently I’ve gotten numerous inquiries regarding the link between grain free dog food and canine dilated cardiomyopathy. The link is being investigated by numerous veterinary cardiologists, as well as the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA recently released the list of brands most commonly associated with the condition. I know this has a lot of you worried about your dogs. Unfortunately, investigations are in the very early stages. The initial concerns regarding taurine ...amino acid deficiencies are not as clear cut as we had hoped. There is no time frame on how long this investigation will take. Currently, the number of reported and suspicious cases is quite low. However, due to the limitations in testing and lack of clear understanding, those low numbers are not indicative of much. Veterinarians do not have much information beyond what the FDA has released to date. There are no clear recommendations regarding what diets to avoid and what to feed. When speaking to various cardiologists and nutritionists, the recommendation, on average, is to stick with the brands that do more nutritional research and carry less of the implicated ingredients. The brands that have always been on the cutting edge of research are invariably Royal Canin, Hill’s and Purina. Finally, this email is not meant to be an indictment of grain free diets, nor is it to start a discussion on the pros and cons of various diets. This message is strictly for informational purposes. As more information is released I will send further messages. I will be waiting for good scientific consensus before making strong recommendations. I’ve attached several links below that go into much greater detail on the condition and the findings to date. https://vetnutrition.tufts.edu//a-broken-heart-risk-of-he/ https://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu//uc-davis-investigates-link https://www.fda.gov//fda-investigation-potential-link-betw -Dr. Jack

Hill's is voluntarily recalling a specific set of canned canine food products due to potentially elevated levels of Vitamin D. The recall affects canned diets only. The recall is strictly voluntary and the amount of Vitamin D concerned is not considered unsafe for healthy pets. However, if you feed your pets any canned Hill's product, please look at this website(https://www.hillspet.ca/en-ca/productlist) and contact us if your food is affected. If your food does not match the SKU and the Lot code/Date code, there is no need to contact us as your food is not affected by the recall.
