On the occasion of McGill’s Bicentennial, Homework Zone is also celebrating 10 years of collaborations, connections and building bridges between McGill University, local communities, schools and youth. The aim of HZ is to promote post-secondary education as a real possibility for Elementary and Secondary students from all backgrounds, by connecting them with McGill volunteers in one-on-one and small group afterschool sessions and activities, offering them academic and socio-e...motional support through great mentorship experiences. Since 2011, HZ has worked in over 10 schools around Montréal and Kahnawà:ke and with over 2000 youth and McGill volunteer mentors. Hear what this year’s Program Coordinators, mentors and school partners have to say about the potential and impact of HZ, especially in a time where creating close connections have been severely tested. Big thanks to everyone who made this video possible and of course to our wonderful staff, volunteers, youth, families and school partners who have worked hard to make this past year possible and beautiful. Happy Birthday HZ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpGB2zOO14Q

BLACK GRAD POST: This year, the McGill Racialized and Ethnic Persons Senate Subcommittee and the Black Students' Network are organising a virtual Black Grad ceremony. Black Grad is an event that aims to honour and celebrate the dedications, contributions, and achievements of all Black students at McGill. We are inviting students who graduate(d) in December 2020, or February and May 2021 to participate. This event is not a replacement for convocation, rather it is an addition...al celebration which will take place during the convocation period at McGill. In hosting Black Grad, we recognize that Black students have often faced countless institutional, economic and socio-cultural barriers to accessing higher education. Even those who have been successful in entering academia have reported feelings of isolation, fears of being misunderstood by their peers, and experienced a form of culture shock when they arrived at McGill. This phenomenon is well-documented by Dr. Rosalind Hampton (Assistant Professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto) in her dissertation, Racialized Social Relations in Higher Education (McGill University, Doctoral Dissertation 2016). It is for this reason that we believe in the importance of having an event dedicated to acknowledging the multifarious ways that Black students continue to challenge this campus through their community-wide commitment to justice, equity, and excellence. To sign up for Black Grad, students should fill out this form: https://forms.gle/JesTbnceyYkRGJqY6

First Peoples face numerous obstacles on their path to academic success, and it is important to recognize these systemic barriers. Five webinars will be held in the coming months to identify these barriers, come up with ways to overcome them, and encourage the engagement of university and government actors at the Forum https://www.fourwav.es/view/2227/info/
