Go drink some tea- Dr. Sasha When my sisters and I were younger, there were few things a cup of peppermint tea couldn’t fixa stomach ache, gas, headache, broken arm, the solution was, Go drink some tea! (with a heavy Jamaican accent) To be honest it did usually help, but now we know of another tea that has multiple benefits just like the fix-all tea that we grew up drinking. Green tea has gotten very popular over the past few years as an alternative to coffee due to the ...minimal caffeine boost it gives in addition to numerous health benefits. Green tea is one of the best antioxidant teas for aiding the liver in detoxification processes, increases metabolism to help lose weight, and mental clarity without the jitters. So go curl up with a nice blanket, a good book, and Go drink some tea! Come in real close insta-fam...today we’re going to talk about Sleep, the fourth pillar in #LifestyleMedicine. Sleep is key; it affects our mood, our mental clarity, our memory, our creativity, our ability to heal...it’s super important. Sleep can be disrupted by trauma, bereavement, anxiety/worries, lack of physical activity - the list goes on. There are prescription medications available (and natural sleep supplements too!), but ideally I would like us all to be able to ...fall asleep like when we were 3 years old - a short read, a warm hug, and a cozy blanket. Having a proper sleep environment is foundational to promoting good sleep. Here are a few pointers: Avoid screens 1 hour before bed Make sure your room is dark (get blackout curtains/blinds and put tape over the glowy light on your electronics) No caffeine after 3PM Have a bedtime routine If you’re a person who tends to keep thinking about your to-do list, have a small notebook that you can write thoughts down in. Once its out of your head and on paper, you’ll feel more settled. There’s tonnes more about sleep that we can talk about, so look out for future posts on that. A great read is Sink into Sleep by Dr. Judith R. Davidson. It’s a workbook that goes waaaaaaaaay beyond the sleep hygiene recommendations. Totally worth the read if you’re wanting to get better quality sleep. Sweet Dreams! #LMWeek #LifestyleMedicine #ACLM #Healthylifestyle #Sleep #Sleephygiene #Sweetdreams #anxiety #Stress

Another man, killed wrongfully by police. Another brother, taken too soon from this Earth. Another son, dead before his mother. This has to stop. #GeorgeFloyd #Lovefirst #checkyourself #systemicpredjudice

Too much stress inna mi lef’ bres’!!! (Jamaican Patois) Translation: I’ve got too much stress causing chest pain on the left side! I love my Jamaican heritage...in the face of trials and difficult times, my people come up with humorous and imaginative ways to get through it. Hopefully my faces of stress collage gave you a little chuckle! Learning to manage your stress is so important for your overall health. Stress (the bad type) can negatively affect your immune syste...m, sleep cycles, appetite, ability to concentrate, memory, ability to lose/gain weight (hello somebody!), mood, etc. It’s important to be able to handle it. When I talk to patients about stress management, I talk about active vs passive ways of relieving stress. Active ways to relieve stress are exercise, journaling, drawing, getting together with friends, meditating/praying, singing, etc. Passive ways are reading, watching a favourite show, listening to music, sleeping, etc. It’s a good idea to have 2 or 3 of each type as your go-to for stress relief. Perspective is important too; oftentimes we worry about things we can’t control, or we focus on what we’ve lost (or stand to lose) rather than what we can gain. Find ways to change your perspective! Humour helps, but also taking a stance of daily gratitude goes a long way. What are your favourite ways to relieve stress? Let me know in the comments! #LMWeek #LifestyleMedicine #ACLM #Healthylifestyle #Stress #Stressmanagement #humour #humor #laughterismedicine

Eat Food. Mostly plants. Not too much. - Michael Pollan There are soooooooo many diets out there that are claiming to be better than the other for your health: paleo, keto, SOFAS, low carb, whole30, mediterranean, vegan, vegetarian, raw, whole food plant based, whole food plant based no oil...and the list goes on. Each diet has their pluses and minuses and each diet can be misinterpreted as something thoroughly unhealthy for the individual. (Bacon wrapped bacon dipped in c...heese is technically a Keto snack. Raw vegan cheesecake [made with cashews] with macerated raspberries and shaved vegan chocolate for breakfast, lunch and dinner would technically be considered vegan/vegetarian, raw, and whole-foods based. Neither of these are the best options. Aaaaand I’m making myself hungry. Let me stop right here.) This is why I love the above quote; it brings together the good of each diet and boils it down to the simple principles of healthy eating. Eat real food. (The stuff that your grandma could buy from the farmer’s market when she was a kid.) Eat mostly plants. (Get those fruit, veggies, nuts, seeds, and beans.) Eat reasonable portions of it all. And live your best life! Tell me in the comments: What’s your diet of choice? Are you Keto for life? Flexitarian? Gluten-free? Raw vegan all the way? Let me know! #LMWeek #LifestyleMedicine #Eatyourgreens #Nutrition #Eattherainbow #ACLM #WFPB #WFPP #Eattolive #Healthylifestyle
