Keeping building occupants safe - there is alot that goes on behind the walls and ceilings in the buildings that we live and work within - head-of-wall firestopping and structural steel fireproofing are just two of the measures taken to improve life-safety in buildings, a few of the reasons that building codes were first introduced. Ontario didn't see its first provincially regulated building code until 1975. Prior to that, the "National Building Code" was adopted by Canadian provinces after it came into effect in 1941.

The exterior finishes on The Salvation Army Journey to Life Centre are nearing completion. The installation of the sign is quite the cherry on top!
It's been quite the undertaking, but the finish line is in sight.

Let us all stand together - there shall be nothing that sets us apart
While many of the local restaurants and bars contemplate strategies to open their doors once again to the public, the outdoor patio is being re-visited as an option for the summer months. I am reminded of an idea I passed along last summer to a few local dignitaries to create alternating one-way streets in the downtown cores to allow one lane to be closed and used for expanding outdoor patio space. Food Trucks can be given monthly licences to setup in some of the areas that... aren’t already served by local establishments or compliment/support the local establishments. If a street has establishments on both sides of the street that would benefit from having an expanded outdoor patio - perhaps that section of street can be closed entirely for the summer months. Its a thought I had pre-Covid but its seems all more relevant at this time and thought I would share the thought. Cory Stechyshyn, OAA President+Architect i4architecture

Wondering how many know what this old drafting instrument was used for? A lettering guide, you set the line spacing and draw light lines to provide guidelines for hand lettering.. yes, we used to letter by hand, with a pencil - not a keyboard. This would establish the height of your lettering and spacing between sentences.... More nostalgia to follow
