It’s become a tradition that every Christmas season all four shifts from the CBRM career firefighter staff take up a collection and chose a charity to make a donation to. This year A platoon adopted a family, B Platoon made a donation to the Salvation Army teen and adolescent program, C Platoon donated to Loaves and Fishes and D platoon made a donation to the Whitney Pier Youth Club and helped them get some lights on their tree outback. Our Members take great pride in giving back to the community we serve and this year more then ever the need is there. From our member and families of IAFF Local 2779 we would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy Holiday season.

Our 911 Dispatchers are a key member of the first responder family, they are the first voice you hear in your time of need and the ear that listens when maybe you’re having the worst day of your life. We all need to do better in supporting each other and taking care of the ones that take care of you.

It’s Fire Prevention Week! Cooking incidents are the number 1 cause of burn injuries and fires in the home. We can all do our part to make our homes and kitchens safer. For more information about Fire Safety and Fire Prevention week visit www.fpw.org

Today we remember the 343 FDNY firefighters that paid the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11 2001. Since that day the FDNY has lost 227 additional firefighters from illnesses and cancers directly related to ground zero and the days after spent digging for victims. Never forget the courage and sacrifice of these Brothers and Sisters.

School's in - and so is safety. Practice extra care and caution for a safe return to school! Back to School week = more traffic, school bus signals, kids cros...sing streets on feet and bikes, and lots of excitement. Anticipate the unexpected! Pay extra attention, slow down, be aware of school buses, and always be ready to stop. See more

The NO Burn Fire Ban has been extended for those areas that are covered by the CBRM’s burn bylaw. If you live in a former town such as those listed in the picture below and or shaded in red on the map you must adhere to the restrictions as you are covered under the burn bylaw and therefore can NOT burn. If you are in a county area of cbrm and are not listed below or shaded red on the map you arent restricted by the CBRM bylaw but must still follow the Provincial standard set out daily on their burn safe website at https://novascotia.ca/burnsafe/

Both Sydney Fire Stations 1 & 2 blued out the lights on our stations today in support of our Brothers and Sisters in Blue. Our Province is in mourning with many lives taking from us during this senseless act of violence. Our hearts go out to all the families involved and especially to the RCMP who had an officer injured and lost an officer as they put the safety of all us Nova Scotians before their own and with no doubt saved lives. Rest In Peace Constable Heidi Stevenson you... will never be forgotten for your sacrifice. #NovaScotiaStrong #RCMPNS #RCMP #CBRM #CBRPS #IAFF International Association of Fire Fighters

IAFF Local 2779, Sydney N.S. 19.05.2020

We wish to pass along the following public service announcement from Director Fred Jeffers, Office of the Fire Marshal for Nova Scotia. It would be the recommendation of the Nova Scotia Office of the Fire Marshal that agencies performing inspection, testing and maintenance on fire protection systems make every effort to continue to carry out their work while ensuring their staff are following any and all of the requirements now legislated due to the provincial state of emerg...ency in Nova Scotia. In line with other similar services being provided, we would suggest that when determining which of your services are more critical, it is a manner of risk management. There may be occasions when portions of your work may need to be postponed, as carrying them out might present a greater risk than not, depending on the occupancy. Obviously emergency calls are crucial in order to ensure that systems are up and running. For example, an annual inspection and test in a nursing home is very important, however, the visual inspection of the sprinklers and piping in the resident areas may present a greater risk than postponing that portion to a later date. An option may be to have the home staff walk through those areas and video the system as much as they can for you to review as a temporary measure. Our expectation is that you would work with clients to ensure both your safety and theirs to minimize the risk. On a case by case basis, if there is some uncertainty about how to proceed, reach out to the local authority, whether it is our office or the local municipality for guidance. We are finding that this is a time to be creative in how we carry out our work. I will say that our office is trying to take a reasonable approach on things and that we realize that there will be occasions when code requirements will need to be relaxed for a period in order to minimize the overall risk to an occupancy. Fred Jeffers Fire Marshal

Please remember: 9-1-1 is for emergency or life-threatening situations only. To speak with police for non-emergency questions or assistance, call 902-563-5151. ... Regarding today's announcement on a provincial state of emergency, the Nova Scotia Government says this: "If you feel someone is not self-isolating or social distancing, first have a polite conversation with them. They may need support. If that fails and they are still not self-isolating or social distancing, call your local law enforcement non-emergency line." Details on restrictions under the Health Protection Act are available at https://novascotia.ca/coronavirus/#alerts.
