Listen as Earl Thiessen shares his story

Oxford House Foundation 21.04.2021

My name is Conrad Cook and I am a Support Worker with the Oxford House Foundation of Canada. The Oxford House has been an elevator on my own road to recovery that provides me with the stability and esteem to face the throws of addiction on a daily basis. Strength and courage are always at the forefront when I walk through the doors of an Oxford House. By having the courage to be yourself, it is possible to lay the foundation upon which a better life can be built. Every day I am provided a groundwork to fight injustice and walk along the road beside agents of positive change. The professionalism and leadership that my peers and coworkers constantly express guides me in my own path to wellness, and structures my livelihood around intrinsic well-being love, support, kindness, and community.

Merry Christmas from our family to yours!!!

Oxford House Foundation 17.12.2020

We hope that you will find ways to connect with loved ones this holiday season and be filled with the hope and joy that comes with this time of year. Recently one of our residents sent us a letter of thanks. Her message was one of gratitude and reminded us that when we are focused on the blessings in our lives, although it does not change the current situation, it does change the way we see it. Yes, Christmas has a very different feel about it this year, yet we are eternally ...grateful for you and all the ways that you have rallied to make a difference for men and women in recovery living in Oxford House homes. So, until we can safely meet up in person again and on behalf of our residents, Board of Directors and staff, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a hope-filled 2021! Your Oxford House Team

At the time I entered my Oxford House home, I was virtually destitute and emotionally and mentally at my wits end. Oxford provided me with very affordable housing in a safe environment with a built-in support group in the form of housemates who are also recovering from their own addictions. Because they are all recovering from similar situations, they were able to understand where I was coming from and provide, along with my own recovery meetings, the support necessary to help me regain my self-respect and confidence to get back on my feet and move forward with my life.

There is no one best practice model for addiction treatment for Indigenous people. Best practices emphasize services that are holistic and flexible. Services should be client-centered and provide a mix of both mainstream and Indigenous approaches. Culturally appropriate programs reflect the Indigenous concept of healing which uses the metaphor of a journey that is an ongoing process of self-transformation. There are a number of protective factors that are necessary for ...recovery for Indigenous people: Reconnection to their spirituality and Indigenous heritage Repairing and rebuilding relationships with family Developing sober support networks Developing coping skills and building self-esteem Maintaining stable housing Maintaining stable employment Historical trauma healing #RedWomanHouse #WolfThinLegsHouse #OspwakanKamikHouse

Oxford House Entry Level Housing Program When an individual applies for housing at Oxford House, an interview with a support worker is scheduled. The Support Worker assesses whether a client would benefit from Entry Level Housing during the interview. Entry Level Housing guides residents who are not yet employed, have been chronically homeless or institutionalized into a more stable lifestyle and assists them to pursue education and/or enter the workforce.... #OxfordHouseProgram #recovery #soberliving

When I chose to recover I tried to do it without medical detox. I hit the floor and had 2 grand mal seizures in a row and chewed through a third of my tongue. M...y withdrawals were extremely difficult and painful. Was it worth it? Yes! All the pain of suffering in early recovery was the best choice I made. I learned to love myself again and face my trauma. I chose recovery. Now I help others just like me, what a blessing! See more

"In my two months at Oxford House, I’ve been able to get my recovery solidified with a supportive group of roommates who take their journey seriously, I’ve had the space and time I needed to get a solid recovery routine and support system, and I’ve been able to set the foundation for success at home and with my spouse." #OxfordHouseWorks #recovery #Soberliving

Women with addictions tend to have fewer resources and more complex challenges than men with substance abuse issues. Services need to take into consideration women’s multiple contexts including gender, social networks, economic factors, family relationships, cultural considerations, physical and mental health. #womeninrecovery #oxfordhouseworks

Jordan says living in an Oxford home with other men who understand where he is coming from and know the same struggles that he is going through is instrumental in carrying him forward. The accountability in the house was amazing, it helped me stay on track. It gave me a solid start and foundation. #OxfordHouseWorks #Recovery #SoberLiving

ADDRESSING THE GAP BETWEEN DETOX AND TREATMENT Oxford House Foundation knows that it is crucial to have a stable continuum from the from the moment an individual decides to become sober all the way through to treatment and after with all safe guards in place. The period for people waiting to get into treatment is one of the most stressful periods for a person making the decision to become sober. The Pre-Treatment Housing Program was developed to address this gap for men and ...women who are concerned about their continued sobriety between detox and treatment. #OxfordHousePretreatmentHousing See more
