If you ever find yourself in British Columbia, one of the most popular destinations to visit is Whistler. Located just two hours from Vancouver, it is a must visit destination for skiing, and snowboarding throughout the winter, and hiking and biking throughout the warmer months. Its mountains make it a popular destination for those who love the outdoors. In 2010, Whistler was the location of Olympic Skiing events as a part of the Vancouver Olympics!

Today we are taking a look at Kaska Dena, a First Nations people group that has roots from the Yukon and extended into northern British Columbia. Traditionally they would hunt caribou, moose, mountain goats, berries and white fish. There are five first nations tribes that make up the Kaska Dena people. There were 2 clans that the Dena people would come from raven or wolf clans. You would follow your mother in your clan. If mom was a wolf her children were wolf. A lot of their art in their culture is made from natural material, wood, antlers and animal hide.

Did you know that British Columbia has the highest waterfall in Canada ? This fact is not really known by many but the waterfall is outstanding and stands at 1,440 feet. Della Falls is not as famous as Niagara Falls in Ontario but it is certainly bigger. Della Falls is located within Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island. A fact about Della falls is that it was named by Joe Drinkwater after his wife Della.

This week we focus our attention on the beautiful Province of British Columbia! . Did you know that the capital city of British Columbia is Victoria! Victoria is known internationally as the City of Gardens. If you love flowers like we do, then you must visit the city for their annual flower count! This is something that dates back to the 1970s. It was a somber yet hopeful day as we stopped to pause and remember survivors of Indian Residential School. Healing is a journey. You are not forgotten. #orangeshirtday

The more we know, the better we understand. In preparing for #orangeshirtday, I discovered the Gradual Civilization Act of 1857. The govt told First Nation and Metis men over 21 that if they wanted the full benefits of British Subjects, they had to give up everything about their Indigenous heritage. They had to learn to speak and write in either French or English, which means they had to stop speaking their native tongue. They had to take on a new surname, approved by the gov...ernment. They gave up all titles to their land. . WHY? . Because the British believed their way of life was more superior to that of Indigenous people. . In order to find a path forward, we need to understand the past mistreatments and injustices. If what happened back then happened today, there would be an uproar. . 80,000 survivors still walk this land today. Where do you see yourself in the bigger picture? Comment below. See more
