What is Sublimation? Most substances move through the phases from solid, to liquid to gas as they warm up by melting, and then evaporating. Some odd ones however (carbon dioxide CO2) skip the liquid phase and go from a solid directly to a gas, this is called sublimation. If you look at the diagram below and follow horizontally along the 1 atm line (1 atmosphere, ie the pressure at sea level), you'll notice that below -78.4 Celcius, carbon dioxide is solid, this is when it's ...called DRY ICE. Any warmer and it becomes a gas. If you're interested in even more chemistry and how this works, check out the link from the UCD ChemWiki where I found this diagram. http://chemwiki.ucdavis.edu//07%3/7.05%3A_Changes_of_State
