ICD leader and mentor Luc Arbour, left, is a 4th Year BSc Kinesiology student at Brock University. Leaving his home in Southwestern Ontario to attend school brought all the usual challenges - where to live, finding classes and new friends. As a type 1 diabetic of 19 years, Luc had some extra planning to do! He shares his story and some encouragement for incoming students like his younger brother Adrien, right, in today's blog post. "Moving away from home to go to school or to... start a new career can be difficult to begin with, but if you are someone with T1D then there are so many more things that need to be considered. How are you going to get supplies like insulin, sites/pods and or sensors? And what are you going to do if you have a severe low or high. When I moved away for school, I ended up living with a roommate in my first year and with 5 other boys for the past 2 years. Something that has helped me to take control and not worry about my diabetes is having these 5 others around and teaching them about my disease and what they can do to help me. Starting in first year I gave them a general outline of what exactly T1D is and how it works. I showed them where I keep all my emergency supplies: Dex tablets, glucagon, insulin pens, sensor reader and test kit. I demonstrated how everything works and what I would do if I needed anything and gave them the ability to play around with some of the devices and see how they worked. (let them do my bg test/read my sensor) We set up an emergency action plan with multiple steps to use if ever we were together, and I were to pass out or get very sick. It worked so well that they came up with a jingle to know when I would need glucagon! Over the past 4 years that I have been away from my family living at school, I have not yet had a moment where I have needed their help; however, whenever I am low they are always close by to make sure that I am alright. Do not be afraid to share with your friends or roommates, have a plan for when you move away from home, you may never need to have anybody help you but by giving them the ability to help and learn more about T1D you could also save someone else’s life."
