ICHTHYS Theatre Productions announces auditions for "In the Tank" by Rosemary Frisino Toohey. This 25 minute comedy is the ICHTHYS contribution to the Lunchtime Theatre series in The Sanderson Centre lobby during February and March 2021. Performance date is February 3rd. This in-person show will observe all pandemic rules. Two adult actors, male or female, are required. Auditions via video must be received by December 20th, 2020 at [email protected] or [email protected] Rehearsals via Zoom will be held in January. CHARACTERS: HARRY/LIZ: Harry is a down-to-earth pragmatic sort. He is a creature inclined to action rather than introspection, who ekes out a living as best he can, dealing with the realities of the moment. Happens to be a lobster. STU/ANGELA: Stu is a fairly philosophical type who observes much and ponders more. Though moving through a world well beyond his control, he manages to maintain a positive outlook on life. Also a lobster. SYNOPSIS: What’s it like to be peered at by hungry humans? Chosen to be someone’s dinner? Such is the predicament of Harry and Stu, two lobsters who find themselves in the tank of a seafood restaurant. Harry has been around the tank a few times and has cleverly devised a dead act. Frozen in position, starey-eyed, claws akimbo, the dead pose is meant to ward off hungry diners. Enter Stu. When Harry explains the rationale behind his act, Stu observes, If you spend all your time acting like you’re dead, what’s the point of being alive? And then Stu reveals a little-known theory: humans are in a tank too and face their own risks. Unlike animals who are ruled by instinct, humans must choose, and for some, that is a recipe for disaster. Because they are afraid, they often make wrong choices. So maybe humans are actually afraid of lobsters and that’s why they keep them bound in rubber bands.
