I hope everyone is safe and healthy these days! I am still grounded from working on our projects in the northern communities, Since I havent posted anything for awhile, I thought Id share some information from a traditional friend that lives here in Manitoba that makes tipis for a few years now, Knowledge that was past on to him. The first teaching to be aware of before commencing construction of a tipi is respect. Treating the items and each other with respect, handling it...ems with carenot dropping nor stepping over or walking on items. As a caretaker of the tipi and its items, respect and care should be followed. The following are the parts needed to construct a tipi: - Canvas waterproof and fire resistant, most common is 18, there are few builders of canvas tipis in Manitoba, this is a special skill; - Once you acquire a canvas tipi tarp you could gather the 15 poles needed, poles should be 8-10 taller than canvas (26-28 feet long), trees could be spruce, tamarack or pine, ideally tall, thin and straight; - Other items needed are dowels to fasten front of the tipi (12-16 18 dowels, willow could be used; - Tent pegs/spikes (12) to secure canvas to the ground; and - 75 of rope. You could find a local instructor to demonstrate how to setup the tipi or view videos on-line. Normally the door would face the eastern direction as is done with most indigenous traditional lodges. There are many differing techniques to erect the tipi, (three pole or four pole method) pole placement, etc. No one method is superior to the other. Erecting the tipi is a great team building experience where participants gain pride in their new skill and appreciation for indigenous ancestors ingenuity. Great knowledge that you have, respect! Thank you, Welalin, Miigwetch!
We are facing a truly unprecedented situation. The global coronavirus pandemic is affecting all our families, our businesses, our communities, and our way of life. During this time, IDSS wanted to reach out and update you on how we are approaching the situation at with our First Nation Partners. First and foremost, our hearts go out to anyone who have been impacted by the virus, either directly or indirectly. Our thoughts are especially with those who are sick and to whom we ...extend our heartfelt wishes. We are truly inspired by the selfless healthcare workers in Manitoba who are on the front lines working tirelessly to care for the communities in need. Since March 11, 2020 IDSS has restricted itself to travel in the First Nation Communities and suspended all projects until further notice. Once the travel bands are lifted, we will communicate with our First Nation partners to take precautionary measures to reintegrate ourselves in the communities to jump start our projects. IDSS is focused on the health and safety for our partners, families, and communities. Stay safe and Healthy Brian Saulnier Director of Operation www.idssmb.ca

Wasagamack First Nation bound! Meet up with the Boreal Home Building/Builders team! Will be posting new pics of our development!
2019 was a time to build a foundation to build on for the Boreal Home Builders Program (BHBP). A year that the BHBP Team innovated new Harvesting , Milling and Building exercises. 2020 will be a little warmer with a roof over our heads and the team will now be able to concentrate their work inside the new build. The new year will bring new skills and development to the team and run towards defending their Class 1 Carpentry. The last stretch will be a challenge, with a tight s...chedule to be completed by March 31st but nonetheless the students are up to the challenge. We are so proud of the Wasagamack First Nation BHBP Team and them moving forward to the next step as apprentices. IDSS would also like to acknowledge our partners, University of Manitoba, Natural Resources Department, Anakiiwin Training Institute, and Wasagamack Employment & Training for their involvement and support for the program. For 2020, I am looking forward establishing new partnerships and starting new community projects. Spread the word and like our page to see more exciting news on Wasagamack First Nations IDSS Boreal Home Builders/Building Program. See more

Former Colleagues that I worked with on this wonderful project. Congratulations to Linda and Ivan on your dedication and hard work to create better culturally appropriate housing for the North!
Todays development skills with the BHBP Trainees was as important as any other day. Both groups worked on how to calculate runs & rises for stairs and to make gussets plate that will transfer stresses between connected members and help strengthen their communitys roofs. Great Work BHBP Team!

My Perimeter seat mate thought it would be great to take a picture, me on an anxiety level through the roof during turbulence on our flight back from the IDSS B...oreal Home Builders Program trip.
