"Remembrance Day is here. I have my poppy. The challenge is to stop it falling out and disappearing. They are not easy to wear. Maybe that is a good thing." Be sure to read this moving new blog post by Wendy Gruner. On the one-year-anniversary of the release of her memoir, Children of a Faraway War, 2019, Wendy writes from personal experience about #RemembranceDay, #ArmisticeDay, peace and loss. https://www.wendygruner.com/post/musings-on-november-11

Marilyn Carr’s family arrived in Deep River, Ontario in 1960 because her dad got a job at a mysterious place called the plant. The quirky, isolated residence for the employees of Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories was impeccably designed by a guy named John Bland. It’s a test-tube baby of a town that sprang, fully formed, from the bush north of Algonquin Park, on the shore of the Ottawa River. Everything has already been decided, including the colours of the houses, inside an...d out. What could possibly go wrong? Nowhere like This Place is a coming-of-age memoir set against the backdrop of the weirdness of an enclave with more PhDs per capita than anywhere else on earth. It’s steeped in thinly veiled sexism and the searing angst of an artsy child trapped in a terrarium full of white-bread nuclear scientists and their nuclear families. Everything happens, and nothing happens, and it all works out in the end. Maybe. Marilyn Carr is a class of 2020 MFA graduate from the University of King’s College, Halifax, Nova Scotia, which is her fourth degree, but who’s counting? (She is.) She blogs about the absurdness of everyday life at www.marilyncarr.com, and is currently working on the next installment of her memoirs, How I Invented the Internet. www.marilyncarr.com Purchase links: Amazon.com: https://www.amazon.com/Nowhere-like-This-Plac//1771804351/ Amazon.ca: https://www.amazon.ca/Nowhere-like-This-Place//1771804351/ Kindle e-book: https://www.amazon.ca/Nowhere-like-This-Place-Childhood-// Kobo: https://www.kobo.com/ca/en/ebook/nowhere-like-this-place For more book sellers and more information, visit: http://www.iguanabooks.ca/books/nowhere-like-this-place Marilyn Carr #nuclearchildhood #memoir #DeepRiver #ChalkRiver #nuclearpower #atomic #Canada #books #writinglife #writingcommunity #independentpublishing

Iguana Books is proud to present A DEATH MOST COLD, an academic murder mystery by retired history professor Jerry Petryshyn. Synopsis: A small town college in northern Alberta can be chilling.... One crisp winter morning the college’s domineering president, Vanessa Dworking, is found frozen behind the wheel of her Oldsmobile. Now to be sure, Ms. Dworking was not particularly well liked. In fact, she had a legion of detractors within the institution. Still, the question remained: Was it death by misadventure, or was it murder? Corporal Freta Osprey of the RCMP needs an answer. Thus, she enlists a seemingly hapless college professor, Myron Tarasyn, to help her get the inside college scoop and ferret out the truth. Tarasyn, in turn, has some issues of his own that need sorting. An unlikely pair, they must deal with a host of challenging academics and significant others, who are most uncooperative if not worse! Quite unwittingly, Tarasyn becomes privy to a number of nasty secrets, sordid relationships and shady actions that promise to shed light on a most suspicious death. More about the author: Jaroslav (Jerry) Petryshyn holds a Ph D from the University of Western Ontario. An award-winning author, he taught history for over 30 years before becoming a Dean at Grande Prairie Regional College. He served as the Alberta representative on the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. The wait is finally over! You can now purchase your copy of Jack Whyte's new book of short stories, YESTERDAY'S BATTLES. Purchase links can be found here: http://www.iguanabooks.ca/books/yesterdays-battles To the millions of readers who have found themselves entranced by Jack Whyte's historical novels over the past twenty years, this first collection of Jack Whyte short stories might seem like a radical change of direction, if not an absolute contradiction in terms. But tha...t simply isn't true. There is no change of direction on Whyte’s part in these shorter tales, merely an adjustment of focus, from the panoramic perspective to the personal, intimate viewpoint. The ten stories featured here are distilled from all the elements that have earned Whyte a worldwide readership among lovers of epic historical fiction, an audience that has remained loyal to him for decades. The people they deal with are real credible and utterly, convincingly human and the existential realities that govern their lives are as demanding and immutable as such things have always been. Yesterday’s battles are no different from those of tomorrow.
