Recreational sources of noise: Is wood working a favorite past time? Going to a concert with your friends, or even simply mowing your lawn is exposing yourself to a harmful amount of noise. During activities where you will be exposed to a burst of loud noise or continuous noise, hearing protection should always be worn. If your hobbies include electric tools or loud speakers (or anything in between) you should take precautions to determine how loud the noise is, as well as h...ow long you are being exposed. Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Code has determined that a 85dB is acceptable to work in for no longer than 8 hours, with a 3dB exchange rate. Therefore you can be exposed to 88dB for 4 hours, and 91dB for 2 hours etc. You can use this as a guideline to determine how long/often you can do your activity without permanently damaging your hearing, or use the proper hearing protection to keep yourself safe!
