I’m trying not to tear up again from overwhelming gratitude as I write this, but no promises. This morning I was taken by TOTAL surprise by the SOAR team and ...their announcement of awards. When I had applied for this grant for IISB, (thanks to #GDI for letting us know about it), I applied for it reluctantly. Reluctant because I knew there were so many incredible Indigenous entrepreneurs out there doing such good work and I have never participated in a kind-of ‘Dragons den’ competition before. I didn’t know how I felt about competing for something when I knew there was so many worthy and important Indigenous business that also needed help especially during this Covid era. Covid has change and challenged everything for everyone. For IISB, we had to completely transform our business to virtual and do it quickly because their would be NO international travel or in person gatherings for a couple years. This would be a make or break moment. So I prayed for guidance. Creator quickly reminded me through pray and others that the work we were doing at IISB to elevating Indigenous voices & perspectives and building bridges between communities was also so important and needed to go on, and that I need to be able to let others help us to do so. So with that I applied for the SREDA’s SOAR grant. Joanne was amazing, and made the experience so much less intimidating then what I saw on the TV version of Dragons Den. She told me that they had 5 grants of $5000 to give and there were 6 finalists. Soon we were in the finals and I had to give a presentation to their team about IISB. I decided I was not going to think of this as a completion but rather as an opportunity to tell some incredible community leaders about IISB and the privileged work we get to do and be a part of. The experience was beyond uplifting!! So when we went into the announcements of awards this morning I was feeling nervous like everyone else, because we thought one of us was going home without. But THEN....they shock us by saying ALL of us we’re going home with the $5000. My heart shot through the roof, over the moon that all of us were going to have something. THEN if that weren’t enough they said they had another surprise and called out 3 of us and said they had a vote on best presentations. I didn’t even know that was something they were doing!!! I thought maybe they had a gift certificate or plaque or something for us which was an awesome acknowledgment but NO!!! Instead they said they were given us and additional $5000 each. See there go the tears again... I can’t begin to say how incredible that is for us and our ability to help our Speakers be able to take on this new Covid world of presenting the right way and as a leader in the industry right from the start! Thank you does not do this gift justice and I’m not sure what words would. What I will say is this, we will make you proud Saskatoon and make sure this award goes on to help us help so many many more. HiyHiy. #SOAR #SREDA #SaskatoonROCKS #ElevatingIndigenous
