So today while trying to round up my kids to come up stairs for their online classes, I smashed my foot into the corner of a wall and a lot of swearing ensued. As I hobbled downstairs deciding if I should go to the hospital because my toes were heading in different directions, I decided to reach out to one of my nurse friends @jasmine___bella to see if it was worth going to the ER. Nope. Just tape it up...you’ll waste hours in the ER for nothing... I was already out of X-rays by the time she said that but It’s the thought that counts. Outside of sharing stories about far more important issues, Ive taken a break from posting my work for a few weeks so that I can observe and learn. My hope is that the photo grabs your attention and that you read what I wrote below: The last few weeks have been eye opening. Ive read articles about my own city that have made me feel shocked, angry and ashamed. The worst part is that in reading about the accounts of what these people went through, my first instinct was to poi...nt out things such as the location and age groups these individuals were coming in contact with. Primarily bars filled with drunk students with little to no maturity yet. Then I remembered a simple fact. Bigotry is not something you are born with. Its not something that you develop after 15 dollar beers and 2 shots. Its something you are taught. Directly or through observation. Through action and inaction. As a parent Ive rarely discussed different cultures with my kids. They are still very young now but its clear to me that I need to be more proactive in teaching them about these things in the future. So that they may stand up against racism and know better than I did when it is happening. As a Canadian I think its in our nature to be more subtle and polite when it comes to many issues. This shouldnt stop us from seeing and speaking up against the evils of racism. As an educated, privileged, white human male, I know I will never understand the struggles and hatred that many others deal with in every day life. But I will do my best to learn from these events and ensure that Im not just a passive observer anymore. #blm #fuckracism
