Common in medieval funerary art, Vanitas (Latin noun: emptiness, futility, meaninglessness) themes help the viewer reflect on the transience of existence, the unsatisfactoriness of pleasure and the inevitability of death. Our Vanitas Heart Ornaments are a little Victorian, a little dark and a whole lot of colourful fun! 2.75 x 15 $27 in our online store: store.illuminatiglassworks.ca

Memento Mori (Latin: "remember death") is the Medieval Latin theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of existence and the transient nature of all worldly goods and pursuits. It has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating non-attachment and other virtues. In art, Memento Mori are artistic or symbolic reminders of mortality. The high voltage sign is just for fun! How do you get the images onto the glass? is easily the most frequently asked question from our customers. We use traditional screen printing techniques, but rather than using inks, we use fine powdered glass or frit. So anytime you see a piece of our work with imagery on it, you’ll know how we did it!
