The Art Of Framing When it comes to Picture Framing, the question I get asked the most is why is it so expensive. Lets have a look at what is involved in quality conservation framing. Conservation meaning, using acid free mat boards and backing, including tapes. These components are to keep your artwork or whatever you are framing from discolouring or deteriorating in the frame. Some paper products need to be treated first to prevent discolouring. There are several differe...nt styles and colours to choose from in both mat boards and frames. The frames themselves are made from wood or composite (plastic). Wood is at least twice the price of a composite frame. And framing is based on materials used. i.e. size of what is being framed, quantity of mats, type of glass. Its very labour intensive and takes time to do properly. You Name It We Frame It is one of our tag lines and is quite literal. We frame just about anything from photos and certificates, posters and prints, canvases and needle points/stitching including stretching these items. We also frame sports jerseys, jackets and memorabilia, ranging from war medals, photo collages, concert tickets, hockey sticks.and the list goes on. Where should you go for framing? Of course you should come to Images 21 Framing And Art Centre You should go to a local frame shop that specializes in framing and stay away from big box stores. Big box stores dont usually have experienced framers, they have order takers. They do not do the work on the premises, they send it to a central warehouse. Even with the high discounts they offer, you will still get a better price from a local framer. One more reason to get a quote and shop around. I guarantee a better price from a written quote from a big box retailer by at least 15%. With over 30 years experience in the industry, I can say that I have seen examples of excellent and creative framing and examples of poor framing. This week , We highlight The Art of David Ward Prints Available and in Stock Born in Yorkshire, England, David immigrated to Canada in 1977. In 1985 and 1986 he studied Graphic Design at George Brown College in Toronto and, after exploring other interests for a time, pursued a career as a freelance illustrator and designer. He has created images for some of the leading book publishing firms in Canada, including Penguin and Viking Press. From 1986 to 1987, David worked as a fl...oor trader at the Toronto Stock Exchange. At 21 he became an Independent on the newly established Futures Exchange where he made his living trading TSE-index futures contracts. Paradoxically, in addition to financing Davids early years as a full-time artist this experience played a large role in shaping his perspective and general artistic sensibilities. In 1988, after a number of successful gallery shows, a sea-kayaking trip along the wild shore of British Columbia's Queen Charlotte Islands led David to realize that fine art was his true vocation. Within weeks of returning, he left behind the security of the commercial design world and moved to the Mexican artist colony of San Miguel de Allende. There he worked on a series of West Coast Landscapes for exhibitions the following year. Subsequent trips have resulted in numerous works depicting the landscape, life and architecture of central Mexico. David's success may well be attributed to his extensive travels, from Africa, Asia and Central America to the more remote corners of North America: Mystical places such as the Black Hills of South Dakota, the American South West and Canadian Arctic. In their own way, all these places have inspired a rich array of works which now hang in private and corporate collections in Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong.
