Jiaogulan, also known as gynostemma pentaphyllum, has been studied since the 70's for its many virtues. Here is a recent study on chronic stress and anxiety. Background The ethanol extract of Gynostemma pentaphyllum Makino leaves (EGP) has been reported recently to have anxiolytic effects on chronically stressed mice models. Purpose We aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of EGP on anxiety level in healthy Korean subjects under chronic stressful conditions. Study design Double-blind, placebo-controlled trial Methods This study was conducted with 72 healthy adults who had perceived chronic stress and anxiety with a score on the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) from 40 to 60. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either EGP (200 mg, twice a day, N = 36) or placebo (N = 36). All participants were exposed to repetitive loads of stress by performing the serial subtraction task for 5 minutes every second day during the 8-week intervention. Primary outcome of Trait-STAI and secondary outcomes of State-STAI, total score of STAI, Hamilton Anxiety Inventory (HAM-A), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), blood norepinephrine and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase, cardiovascular autonomic nervous system (ANS) functional test, and heart rate variability (HRV) test were measured before and after intervention. Results After the 8-week intervention, the EGP significantly lowered the score of the Trait Anxiety Scale of the STAI (T-STAI) by 16.8% compared to the placebo (p = 0.041). The total score on the STAI decreased by 17.8% in the EGP group and tended to improve compared with that of the placebo group (p = 0.067). There were no significant differences in the changes in score of S-STAI, HAM-A, BAI, and other parameters from baseline between the two groups. There was no causal relationship between the ingestion of EGP and adverse drug reactions. Conclusion We found that supplementation with EGP reduced anxiety proneness in subjects under chronic psychological stress, as shown by a decrease in the score of T-STAI and the tendency for decrease in the total score of STAI. This result suggests that EGP supplementation can be used as a regimen to safely reduce stress and anxiety; however, more studies are needed to establish the long-term safety and effectiveness. Phytopreventative anti-hyperlipidemic effects of gynostemma pentaphyllum in rats: Abstract... PURPOSE: Gynostemma pentaphyllum is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. Preliminary studies indicate Gynostemma isolated triterpine glycosides lower cholesterol. Our studies examine anti-hyperlipidemic effects of gypenosides. METHODS: Gynostemma activity was examined in poloxamer P407 induced hyperlipidemia in rats. RESULTS: 1 g/kg P407 induced plasma triglyceride (25 fold), total cholesterol (6 fold), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) (7 fold), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) (1.6 fold), and nitrite (8 fold). After acute (4 days) and chronic (12 days) oral administration the gypenoside extract (250 mg/kg) reduced triglyceride (53% and 85%, respectively) and total cholesterol levels (10% and 44%, respectively). No significant effects on LDL or HDL cholesterol were observed. The gypenosides reduced nitrite approximately 80%. Similar results were obtained with atorvastatin (75 mg/kg for 4 days); except that LDL cholesterol was reduced (17%) and HDL cholesterol increased. 50% of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) plasma activity was inhibited by approximately 20 microM P407. Gynostemma had no effect on LL, however, it reversed the P407 inhibition of LPL activity in a concentration-dependent manner, with a 2-fold increase at approximately 10 microg/ml. CONCLUSIONS: These studies demonstrate efficacy of Gynostemma pentaphyllum in lowering triglyceride, cholesterol and nitrite in acute hyperlipidemia. The results suggest further investigations of Gynostemma gypenosides are warranted to examine the mechanisms of this activity. PMID: 16401396

Antiobesity effect of Gynostemma pentaphyllum extract (actiponin): a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Abstract... OBJECTIVE: The effects of actiponin was investigated, a heat-processed Gynostemma pentaphyllum extract, on body weight, fat loss, and metabolic markers of Korean participants in a 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. DESIGN AND METHODS: Obese participants (BMI 25 kg m(-2) and WHR 0.90 for male or WHR 0.85 for female) who had not been diagnosed with any disease and met the inclusion criteria were recruited for this study. The 80 subjects were randomly divided into actiponin (n = 40, 450 mg day(-1) ) and placebo (n = 40) groups. Outcomes included measurement of efficacy (abdominal fat distribution, anthropometric parameters, and blood lipid profiles) and safety (adverse events, laboratory test results, electrocardiogram data, and vital signs). RESULTS: During 12-week of actiponin supplementation, total abdominal fat area, body weight, body fat mass, percent body fat, and BMI were significantly decreased (P = 0.044, P < 0.05, P < 0.0001, P < 0.0001, and P < 0.05, respectively) in the actiponin group compared to the placebo group. No clinically significant changes in any safety parameter were observed. CONCLUSION: Our study revealed that actiponin is a potent antiobesity reagent that does not produce any significant adverse effects. These results suggest that actiponin supplementation may be effective for treating obese individuals. Copyright 2013 The Obesity Society.
