It is coyote mating season - individuals are actively looking for a long term mate and will be more visible and vocal. It is normal for us to see increased coyo...te activity at this time of year. Coyotes eat fruit, insects, and other animals. Much of their diet consists of rodents. Discouraging rodents by keeping your property free from bird seed, garbage, pet food and fallen fruit will help to keep coyotes away from your home too. We encourage everyone to keep cats indoors and supervise small dogs when off-leash on your property. Coyotes are typically timid. If you encounter one, use a loud, firm voice and clap. If you live in an area of high activity and walk a dog, carry a small air horn (to deploy only if the coyote approaches). Keeping your pets on-leash will greatly reduce the chance of a physical encounter between your dogs and our wild canines! Please never intentionally feed coyotes or encourage any wildlife to visit your property for food, it rarely ends well for the animals, despite kind intentions. Wesley Barr

IT’S OUR 20th BIRTHDAY Today, September 16th we’re celebrating IN THE RAW... Food for Dogs and Cats 20th birthday! Wow, we still cannot believe it has been 2...0 years! And what an awesome, beautiful,crazy and wonderful journey it has been. Something that blossomed from a stray thought, to an idea, to a plan and then to fruition has been quite a gift. For many of you the story of how IN THE RAW began remains untold. It all began for the love of a Dalmatian named Joshua, who had several health problems. Ultimately, we were not happy with what was available for him diet or treatment wise. My dear friend, Karen gave me a book called Give A Dog A Bone by Dr. Billinghurst. It was a one shot read and a lightbulb moment... next stop was to the butcher shop! After seeing the huge improvements we were able to achieve with his health through diet, supplements and amazing natural veterinary care with Dr. Janice, I was convinced this was the way to go. Rob, my life and business partner of 32 years was on board from the get go. We were both veterans in the pet food industry in the Lower Mainland. And felt very strongly that there was a real need for a new approach to natural health and nutrition for companion animals. It took us very little time to tackle opening a brand new concept business. It was a business venture that had never been tried before, a pet food store catering to ALL raw food diets. We wanted to feature all Canadian raw food companies and to support many local cottage industry suppliers. We had faith that it would be well received. The next big hurdle was how to get it off the ground... most financial institutions were not interested in a new/questionable foray into the pet food retail business. But, my Father and Mother were on board and offered to help, both financially and physically. They came out to BC from Ontario and poured their collective blood, sweat and tears into helping us get the shop open. In honorarium we opened the store on my Mom’s birthday. So our 20 year anniversary is bittersweet, wishing they were both still here to witness the growth of our vision. Many, many thanks are to be shared with all of the wonderful people that have made this vision a reality - from my parents, our AMAZING staff - both past and present, our suppliers and especially YOU, our clients. You have put your faith in the idea that good nutrition for our four-legged companions reap so many amazing benefits in physical, mental and spiritual health. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embarking on this journey with us. Jill, Rob and the IN THE RAW... crew.
